Barnsley have exceeded expectations this year by emphatically cementing their status as a Championship club despite losing star men such as Sam Winnall, Conor Hourihane, James Bree and Alfie Mawson over the course of the season.

This season was about consolidation and, under the guidance of promising young manager Paul Heckingbottom, Barnsley have done that in style.

In the summer, the goal will be to secure long term replacements for the departed quartet of star players so that Barnsley can kick on next term and start pushing for a play-off place at the very least.

James Bree is one player that they will need to find a replacement for.

The 19-year-old starlet was snapped up by Aston Villa in January and his absence is clear in Barnsley's defence.

Signing a new right back would allow the attack-minded Andy Yiadom to push further up the field or add competition for places with him.

Barnsley should target Liverpool's Connor Randall as James Bree's long term replacement.

Randall was close to securing a loan move to Barnsley in January but that never came to fruition.

However, Heckingbottom needs to reignite his interest in the Liverpool youngster but this time aim for a permanent deal.

Nathaniel Clyne has made the right back spot his own at Liverpool and the emergence of Trent Alexander-Arnold has pushed Randall further down the pecking order for the senior squad.

Liverpool might be willing to let the 21-year-old leave permanently this summer and with age still on his side, he would be the perfect like-for-like young right back to replace James Bree at Barnsley.
