It has been a very busy summer already for Leeds United and there could be a lot more twists before the window shuts for Marcelo Bielsa as he looks to build a side capable of winning promotion.

Whilst the sales of Jack Clarke and Pontus Jansson have brought in funds to deal with any potential FFP issues, that might not be the end of the departures, with the influential Kalvin Phillips linked with Spurs.

However, one man Leeds probably didn't expect to face a battle to keep was fellow midfielder Mateusz Klich.

The Polish international enjoyed a very productive campaign last time out after forcing his way into Bielsa's plans and established himself as a key figure in the Whites team, scoring ten goals and registering eight assists.

Such form appears to have caught the eye of top-flight Burnley though, with the Daily Mail suggesting they are readying a bid for the 29-year-old.

There has been uncertainty about Klich's contract status too, which expires next year, with the Yorkshire Evening Post claiming that Leeds have a 12-month option after that, whilst the Mail insist he will be a free agent next year.

If it's the latter, the Championship side could be in a very difficult situation as the chance to move to the Premier League has to appeal and they know it's their final opportunity to command a decent fee.

In an ideal world the former FC Twente would be playing at the highest level with the Yorkshire side, however Klich could feel it's his last chance to get a move to the top-flight.

Many Premier League sides are reluctant to move for players who are 30, which the midfielder will be next year, so it really could be a case of now or never. Of course, a failure to match his high standards from last season would also realistically end any interest as well.

Therefore, Klich may be willing to push for a transfer that would obviously also be a massive financial benefit too.

Leeds fans may not agree with such a view, particularly to a club like the Clarets who are nowhere near the size of the Whites and their ambition is rarely beyond just surviving.

But, the reality is that the Premier League is the pinnacle for most players and the chance to test himself against the elite, whilst at his best, means that Klich may force a surprise departure from Elland Road.

It would be a blow for Leeds but it highlights the risks clubs run when they let key assets run their contract down and the power those above have when they want a player.
