Sunderland are heading down to the Championship after their relegation from the Premier League was confirmed last week.

It has been a bitterly disappointing season for the Black Cats, only made worse by fierce rivals Newcastle United's success, and they will be competing in the second tier this season.

A major summer exodus is expected with the likes of Jordan Pickford, Lamine Kone, Vito Mannone, Fabio Borini, Jermain Defoe and Bryan Oviedo among those expected to leave.

If Bryan Oviedo leaves, and Manquillo returns after his loan spell, Sunderland will need to snap up a left back for their Championship campaign.

Sunderland are likely to spend most of their season on the front foot and the attacking onus will be on them so attack-minded full backs will be a necessity.

One target they could explore is Marvin Johnson.

The Oxford United star has been reformed from a winger into a left back this season and taken to his new position with ease.

The 26-year-old is too good for League One and Sunderland would have to move quickly to land their man with a number of top clubs such as Manchester City chasing his signature.

More than 30 scouts are watching the former Motherwell ace and Sunderland would do well to sign him for their Championship campaign as they seek to win promotion.

With a brilliant left foot and a good work ethic, Johnson is everything that you want from a modern day full back or wing back and he is unlikely to stay with League One Oxford beyond the end of the season.
