Sheffield Wednesday must hold onto key players if summer transfer funds are limited.

The South Yorkshire club will be wary of falling foul of the profitability and sustainability rules once again after being placed on a soft transfer embargo last season.

If Steve Bruce's summer funds are limited as a result then he must ensure he builds a team around the core group of players in his current squad. Top goalscorer Stephen Fletcher is likely to stay and will be an important part of Bruce's plans next season. Additionally midfielders Barry Bannan and Adam Reach enjoyed further impressive seasons and both have the experience and work ethic that characterises Steve Bruce teams.

Another player the Owls need to keep hold of his Fernando Forestieri. The 29-year-old missed parts of the season through injury but finished the campaign strongly with two goals in Wednesday's final four games, including a wonder strike against Norwich City. While the forward had a mixed season overall, there were times when he reminded fans how much talent he has and if Bruce can get the best out of him he could be a big part of their squad next season.

Wednesday have recently released several players which has indicated that the summer transfer budget may be tight with these departures freeing up wages. Bruce may have to dip into the loan market or look at signing free agents in order to strengthen his team. Hull's Fraizer Campbell could be available if he fails to agree a new contract in East Yorkshire. The forward netted 12 goals for the Tigers this season and has worked with Bruce in the past at Sunderland. Michael Hector is also strongly linked with a return to Hillsborouh but a potential move may depend on his parent club Chelsea.

The Owls made a late play-off surge towards the end of the season and there were signs that Bruce could build a team capable of challenging for next season. Norwich showed that you don't need to spend a fortune to achieve success. If Wednesday's budget is limited they can take comfort from the Canaries' top scorer and Championship player of the season Teemu Pukki who signed on a free transfer last summer.

If Steve Bruce can hold onto his core group of players while making a few additions then Wednesday could go one step further next season.
