Adebayo Akinfenwa is leading the promotion charge as the focal point of Wycombe’s team.
Wycombe currently sit in the last automatic spot. Although losses in their last two games have allowed Accrington Stanley to climb above them and the gap between them and the play-off spots is now minuscule.
Akinfenwa has been key in getting them there with 15 goals in 33 games and a total of 2941 minutes. This means he is averaging a goal every 196 minutes or just over a goal every two games. Considering that he is 35-years-old, this is a great return from the physical striker.
His goals have directly brought about 10 points and without them extra points they wouldn’t even be in the play-offs, so he is clearly having a significant impact on the club’s fortunes.
This is nothing new for Akinfenwa because he helped his last club, AFC Wimbledon, get promoted to League One through the play-offs in the 2015/16 season, but his contract wasn’t renewed at the end of the season. His 2011/12 season with Northampton was his best return with 18 goals, so he is close to having his best ever season and there’s still 11 league games left.
He actually appears to be getting better with age, which is great news for the club. Gareth Ainsworth and the Wycombe fans will be hoping that his invaluable experience will be pivotal for the remainder of the season as they hope to end their six year absence from League One. Regardless, it’s been a remarkable season for the striker.
