‘The jury is out’- West Brom taking risk with latest addition: The Verdict

West Brom have had a bid accepted for Cardiff’s Kenneth Zohore, report BBC Sport.

It is believed that The Baggies submitted a bid of around £8m for the striker, which means that the player now needs to agree personal terms and pass a medical.

Zohore was key a key focal point in the Cardiff side which won promotion to the Premier League, but found himself out of favour often last season, making just seven Premier League starts.

The Baggies have been in need of a striker after losing Jay Rodriguez to Burnely and Dwight Gayle after his loan came to an end. Those two scored 45 league goals between them last season and if Bilic is to get his side challenging for promotion again then he will need to bring in forwards.

The Danish striker could be the first step in replacing those goals, and his all-round game should serve his new team very well. He is a strong, combative player and his hold up play was crucial to Neil Warnock’s side in their promotion campaign.

It will be interesting to see how he fares under Slaven Bilic, and if he will be given a prominent role in the first-team. Our writers share their views on whether this signing will be a success.

George Brooks

“This could be a decent signing for West Brom.

“The Baggies are in desperate need of a striker, with Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez having left the Hawthorns and Salomon Rondon on his way out too.

“He is still a good striker at Championship level and I think he’s more than capable of making an impact for West Brom next season.

“He has a respectable goalscoring record in the Championship, although West Brom fans would have probably hoped for a better replacement for Gayle and Rodriguez.

“The pair scored 45 goals between them last season and as West Brom’s only striker, Zohore would be under an awful lot of pressure to deliver next season.

“If he does move to the Hawthorns, it will be interesting to see if he can handle that pressure.”

George Harbey

“I think that this is a transfer that is likely to divide opinions amongst the West Brom faithful, especially for a fee of around £8m.

“Albion clearly need a new striker in order to replace Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez, but the jury is out on Zohore for me – he’s never really been prolific in the Championship.

“He only scored nine goals for them as they won promotion to the Premier League, and is a very different player to both Rodriguez and Gayle.

“They were known for getting in behind, but Zohore is known for his physical prowess and aerial threat, which could hint at a different style of play under Bilic for next season.”

Kealan Hughes

“Zohore has shown he is a handful at Championship level, and if he could improve his technical ability, particularly his finishing, then he will become a key player for Bilic.

“He is a great hold up player and will offer a presence in the opposition penalty area, both in the air and with his feet, so should prove to be a good focal point for the likes of Matt Phillips and Filip Krovinovic.

“Bilic should play attacking football and in order to get the best out of Zohore he should partner him with another striker. Zohore is great for knock-downs and unsettling a defence, allowing for a poacher to pick up loose balls, and he should be involved in a lot of goals next season.

“He is only 25 too, so if he can add a few more goals to his game and become an all-round striker then £8m could prove to be a bargain.”
