The 2-1 defeat to Norwich City was a setback for Rotherham United in their battle to avoid an immediate return to League One following promotion last season, but it did at least see the continuation of an impressive run of form for one Millers player in particular.
For the sixth time in five games, an unlikely source found the back of the net to give Rotherham what was at that point in the game a potentially crucial equaliser.
While it didn’t quite turn out the way, Semi Ajayi will surely be loving his new found form in front of goal that has seen him double his number of league goals in a Rotherham shirt.
Those goals haven’t all been for nothing either, with match-winning doubles against Blackburn and QPR doing wonders to reignite the Millers’ survival hopes.
While several of those goals have been towering headers that demonstrate the Nigeria international’s importance in the penalty area, there have also been some precise long-range strikes into the bottom corner that Ajayi will feel have demonstrated his all-round ability as well.
Survival will have always been the aim for Rotherham in their first season back in English football’s tier, and Ajayi has now become crucial to that at both ends of the pitch.
With Rotherham likely to have to throw caution to the wind plenty more times between now and the end of the season, Ajayi will no doubt be looking forward to getting yet more chances to increase his goal tally further, and with it, his own growing reputation.
