All things considered, Barnsley should be pleased with their mid-table finish in the Championship last season.

After winning promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs in the 2015/16 season, they fared much better than counterparts Burton Albion (who narrowly stayed up) and Wigan Athletic (who were relegated again).

This is especially impressive considering the amount of players that they lost in summer 2016 and in January 2017.

Alfie Mawson headed to Swansea City, Aston Villa completed a double swoop for James Bree and Conor Hourihane while Sam Winnall left for Sheffield Wednesday.

And the exodus continues to happen.

Marley Watkins and Josh Scowen have both left on free transfers to join Norwich City and Queens Park Rangers respectively while Marc Roberts has joined Birmingham City.

Paul Heckingbottom once again faces the uphill task of rebuilding his squad but he has already drafted in a number of promising players, such as Luton Town's Cameron McGeehan and Partick Thistle star Liam Lindsay.

Barnsley need to sign at least one more winger, though.

They have lost Marley Watkins, which is a big blow, and impressive youngster Ryan Kent has returned to Liverpool after his loan spell.

The Tykes have signed two players from Southampton this summer, landing defender Jason McCarthy and signing Lloyd Isgrove after he was released.

Isgrove fills one void on the wing but they should look at Southampton once more to fill another.

Young Josh Sims could be available for a loan deal and he would be a shrewd piece of business.

The 20-year-old brings pace, skill and a direct approach to his football.

Able to operate on both wings, the former England under-18 starlet would be a terrific signing for Barnsley.
