The departure of Kemar Roofe would have understandably worried some Leeds fans but Noel Whelan believes his replacement; Eddie Nketiah, is the real deal.

The Arsenal forward joined on loan on transfer deadline day and just a few days later started and scored in his first Leeds match, against Salford City in the Carabao Cup.

He is very highly-rated by those at Arsenal and Whelan believes they are right to think that, highlighting the 20-year-old's movement as a key attribute which will see him succeed in the Championship.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said: "I’m really excited, I thought his performance was absolutely brilliant.

"I was really excited about watching him and seeing what all the hype was about, I tell you what, the hype is real. He’s a very, very good football player and he will get a let of goals just because of his movement and intelligence.

"He’s lively, for a young man he’s got a very mature way of playing. He knows when to release the ball and then he’ll move away. He’s got pace, he’s got brains but his movement inside that box, wow. I was loving him from the first whistle."

It will be a steep learning curve playing under Marcelo Bielsa and Nketiah may have to wait for his chance to start in the league, but so far he has done everything right and proved he can compete with Patrick Bamford for a starting place.

He should get a chance off the bench in the coming games and if he makes an effective impact then it shouldn't be too long before he replaces Bamford in the side, particularly if Bamford's injury problems recur.

The Verdict

Although he lacks the link-up play and ability to hold the ball up which Bamford possesses, Nketiah is in many ways ready-made for this Leeds team, as he slots very well into the line-up and suits those around him.

He is not yet the complete striker Bielsa likes but his instinct to get in the right positions should serve him well, and with the likes of Pablo Hernandez and Jack Harrison creating chances he should help himself to a fair few goals.

So far he has taken the chance given to him and if he continues to work hard then his ability should shine through, and in a few weeks time he could be a permanent fixture in the side.
