There was a good start for Hull City in the Championship this weekend as Leonid Slutsky led his Tigers to a decent 1-1 draw away at Aston Villa.

The Tigers were making their bow back in the second tier following their relegation from the Championship and despite a shaky first-half performance, they turned it around and thanks to a Jarrod Bowen goal, they were fully worth their point, finishing the stronger.

And it's 20-year-old Bowen who we're singling out for praise after his performance against Villa.

It was a tough place for Slutsky to go for his first professional game in-charge at Hull with Villa being a team who, by all accounts, are easily amongst the favourites for automatic promotion.

They've spent millions on fees and wages over the past two seasons and it's clear that the expectation is really on Villa to return to the Premier League this time around.

That is why, when Hull finally found their gear in the second half, it was slightly surprising to see them silence Aston Villa quite so easily.

But young Jarrod Bowen was the hero, scoring a great goal and showing signs of endeavour, good movement and the obvious ability to stick the ball in the back of the net too.

He's had quite a strange footballing journey compared to others born his age, which makes his rise to the top all the more admirable.

He played with the now defunct Hereford United until he was picked up by Hull City to finish off his footballing scholarship.

That was back in 2014 but when Bowen was just 16-years-old, he was scoring goals in-front of the Bulls' famed Meadow End which of course, now sees football every weekend thanks to the formation of Hereford FC.

Having worked his way through the Hull youth teams, Bowen now finds himself as part of Slutsky's inexperienced starting XI with no real expectation to be amongst the frontrunners next season.

But after a strong first performance and some good glimpses in pre-season, Bowen is certainly a man to keep an eye on going forward.

Made in Hereford, now shouldering the hopes of Hull supporters in the Championship.
