David McGoldrick who is currently on trial with Sheffield United is what the club need.

At 30-years-old, the former Ipswich man still has what it takes to be able to score consistently in the Championship if given a run of games.

Over the years the amount of goals per season has decreased, but it is the intelligence and understanding of how to play as a striker that makes him a dangerous proposition for opposition defenders.

McGoldrick will be given another chance to impress boss Chris Wilder this weekend in another pre-season friendly.

And it is the perfect opportunity for Blades fans to look to the other side of his game, aside from goals to see if he will be an asset.

The forward was more than happy to come to Bramall Lane to try and earn a contract, it just shows he still has the hunger and desire to compete in the Championship.

He hit the post in his pre-season debut and showed fans he is doing everything he can to show them and the manager he is worthy of a contract.

A man with nothing to lose is capable of anything, and McGoldrick is certainly fitting into that category.

The sticker could be forgiven for doubting his future in the second tier of English football after injuries blighted his career with Ipswich, after an impressive debut season at Portman Road.

But now, released from Ipswich and in need of a new deal elsewhere, the forward is prepared to graft to get a new deal.

Getting that contract is vital as you never know which one is going to be your last.

Blades fans love a player who gives their all. McGoldrick is that, and fans have seen a glimpse in a pre-season friendly.

If he can be brought in on a permanent basis, however, he should accentuate a forward line that on their day, is littered with goals.
