The former Premier League star who Newcastle United should bring in this summer

Published

Newcastle United are back in the Premier League.

Rafa Benitez stuck with the Magpies and his loyalty has paid off.

The Spaniard guided Newcastle United to automatic promotion and the Championship title.

Now the summer rebuild starts and Benitez is very keen for a major summer reshuffle.

Plenty of players face the axe and a number of new faces will be joining Newcastle as Benitez aims to build a squad which is capable of surviving in the Premier League.

One of the desired positions for transfer targets is a new central midfielder.

Jonjo Shelvey has proven himself to be head and shoulders above the rest of the players in the Championship but who should partner him in the middle?

Isaac Hayden has shown glimpses of promise but the youngster is still learning his trade and the step up to the Premier League might be challenging for him.

The more experienced Jack Colback has been out of sorts this season.

Benitez should turn his attention to Alex Song and try to persuade him to return to England.

The former Arsenal and Barcelona star’s most recent Premier League campaigns were on loan with West Ham United.

In his first season with the Hammers, Song was absolutely brilliant and stood out in their midfield.

His second season was hampered by injuries and he subsequently joined Russian side Rubin Kazan rather than sealing a permanent deal.

However, the former Cameroonian international’s talent is clearly there for all to see.

The 29-year-old’s ball retention, composure and passing range is of the highest class and Newcastle would definitely benefit from his experience and talent in the central midfield region.
