The ex-Premier League defender Millwall need to sign to secure their Championship status next season

It’s going to be a tough Championship season next time out and the additions of Sheffield United, Millwall and Bolton Wanderers back to the second tier have certainly made things more difficult for the sides already residing in the division.

Add to them the relegated Sunderland, Hull City and Middlesbrough and you’ve got one of the most competitive second-tier divisions we’ve seen in years.

And for those teams that were promoted last season, it’s going to make things extremely difficult to even survive, let alone place any higher than the bottom-three.

Neil Harris’ Millwall made their way through the League One play-offs last month and did extremely well to beat Bradford City in the final as they returned after some time away.

They’re one of the clubs that are going to have to add pretty heavily if they’re going to stand any chance of surviving and there’s one man we at the FLW think would be a cracking addition to their ranks.

The man in question? Aston Villa defender Joleon Lescott, who is expected to leave the Midlands over the coming months.

A former England international, Lescott never recovered from Villa’s horrendous relegation from the Premier League and didn’t feature an awful lot in a Villa side that struggled in the Championship last season either.

It’s marked a remarkable downturn in his career that has often seen him mix it with some of the best in the world at the highest level in England.

But for Millwall, he could provide just the sort of experience they need to survive at this level next season.

Harris’ group of players did seriously well last season but as any Lions fan and they’ll agree that some serious quality needs to be brought in if they’ve got any chance of doing well next season.

Lescott might be getting older and he hasn’t really played as much as he might’ve liked over the past few months but his quality throughout the majority of his playing career shouldn’t be questioned in the slightest.

Tough, experienced and a player that knows this level well- this is a signing that really makes sense for the Lions.
