‘The ego has landed’ – Plenty of Southend United fans react as significant announcement is made

Last night, Southend United announced their new manager less than an hour before their game with Doncaster Rovers kicked off, and the new man in charge at Roots Hall has been revealed as Sol Campbell.
Southend had been without a permanent manager since Kevin Bond left the side on 6th September after six straight defeats in League One, leaving Gary Waddock to take over since on a caretaker basis, including overseeing the 1-7 defeat to Doncaster Rovers.
Campbell has past managerial experience with League Two side Macclesfield United, having taken over with the Silkmen last November, guiding the side that was then bottom of the Football League to safety on the final day of the season before departing in August, not long after the season had got underway.
Will Campbell be a success at Southend?
Yes

No

Campbell, however, wasn’t the first choice of the Shrimpers board. Former Celtic and Barcelona striker Henrik Larsson was all set to take on the role last week, however talks broke down at the final stages when Tommy Johnson, expected to be Southend’s head of recruitment, accepted an alternative deal elsewhere and talks were ended with Larsson and his proposed assistant Johan Mjallby.
Here, we take a look at reaction from Southend supporters over Campbell’s appointment…

Can we say thanks to Gary Waddock he was in an unenviable position and stuck by the club.
