The managerial merry-go-round is in full effect at the moment as a host of big clubs hunt new managers to take them to the next level.

For some, it’s a hunt that’s familiar to them. Middlesbrough and West Brom both replaced managers during the 2017/18 season, whilst relegated Swansea appointed Graham Potter in the summer of 2018.

When they appointed Potter it was a unique move. He had cut his teeth outside of the English game, but proven himself to be a shrewd manager. He did well with the Swans last season and earned his Premier League switch.

He’s now gone, stepping up to the Premier League with Brighton, which means the Swans are once again looking for a man to take charge. There’s bound to be the usual names bandied about, but if they want to do something really bold, they won’t need to look outside of South Wales.

Over at Newport County, Michael Flynn is doing a superb job and he could be the right man to take Swansea forward. He took over at Newport when they were seemingly destined for the National League, but pulled off a great escape of incredible proportions.

Last season he took them on an FA Cup run, but this season repeated the feat and added a play-off spot as well.

They snuck into the top seven in the final week of the season and have since put Mansfield Town to the sword, leaving a final against Tranmere. Win that and they’re a League One side.

It’s not just what he’s achieved though, his side are tough to break down, stoic at the back but exciting going forward. He’s squeezed 14 goals each out of Padraig Amond and Jamille Matt and manages to be organised and yet exciting going forward.

On a limited budget he’s got an incredible amount from his players and has a big future in the game. It’s a risk going for a manager who has never been out of the basement division, but Swansea have not been making big money signings. They’re hoping to build from the bottom up and that is exactly what Flynn has done at Newport.

They made one bold appointment a year ago, the time is right to make a second.
