After narrowly missing out on promotion last year, but Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to march on upwards this season...

After a take over last season from wealthy backer Dejphon Chansiri, the aim for the Owls was to break free of mid-table obscurity that had dogged them for what had seemed like an eternity.

That feat was achieved, with the club reaching the playoff final and narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premier League.

A second half of season explosion rocketed them up the table after a relatively mediocre start to the season, and after blowing Brighton out of the play offs, their performance in the final was fairly underwhelming, leading to Hull City's promotion to the top flight.

There is no doubt Carlos Carvalhal will undoubtedly be looking to build on the season they've experienced this year and bring in some names to push them further up into the automatic promotion spots, sealing a turn to the Premier League.

This is the dream midfield four for Wednesday next year:

LM - Ola John

Ola JohnOla John

The Dutch winger seems to be in heavy demand this summer and is supposedly on the way out of Benfica, over in Portugal, a happy hunting ground so Carlos Carvalhal in the transfer window in his first year at the club.

The 23-year-old joined Reading on loan on deadline day last year and struggled to break into the first team at first, and was dropped from the squad completely over Christmas, before breaking into the team in 2016.

He was extremely impressive when he did get game time, with Reading hoping to keep him on permanently, but probably won't want to stump up the money to bring him in. He could definitely fit into the Wednesday team next season.

CM - Barry Bannan

bannannnn

The Owls midfielder impressed on loan at Bolton during 2014/15 before moving to Hillsborough from Crystal Palace, where he continued his fine form, finishing in the PFA Championship Team of the Year after a fine season.

There's no reason to replace this man in midfield after a brilliant year, it seems unlikely to think Carlos Carvalhal will be looking to.

If Wednesday are hoping to push up the table next year towards the top of the table, there are few better midfielders in the division in order to push them up there than the Scotland international.

CM - Kieran Lee

Kieran Lee

Another central midfield man there's no need to be rid of, Kieran Lee is slowly becoming a bit of an Owls veteran, accumulating over 120 appearances at the club since moving from Oldham Athletic in 2012.

Like the aforementioned Bannan, he had a fine season in the engine room last year, during which he scored five goals and made three assists, as well as netting in the Championship play off semi final against the Seagulls.

Once again, there's no reason to replace Kieran Lee in midfield, after a year at Sheffield Wednesday.

RM - Ross Wallace

After five seasons at Burnley, Sheffield Wednesday whipped up the Scotsman on a one-yea- deal, and it's fair to say it was a pretty good signing, scoring in both play off semi finals.

He notched four goals and eight assists in his first season at the club, and is confident of earning a new deal at Hillsborough, which will undoubtedly be announced in the coming weeks.

All this means that Wednesday fans will be hoping to see Wallace knock in a couple more screamers on their way to promotion next year.
