It was a season of misfortune for Nottingham Forest during the 2015/16 campaign with very little to cheer about for the Reds contingent.

The Sky Bet Championship outfit will have a new manager in place for the start of the next campaign and the club will hope to challenge higher up the table, particularly now that the club has emerged from the transfer embargo which they were placed under last season.

Forest's ability to challenge will depend largely on the identity of the new manager and also whether he can attract the three or four quality additions that Forest need in order to become a force in the second tier.

The current crop of talent at Nottingham Forest is pretty good although the club is unlikely to go anywhere fast if they do not make the right additions to the squad this summer.

One area in which the club could strengthen is in the middle of the park, where the Reds have sometimes been found wanting in previous seasons.

Football League World writer Lee Clarke takes a look at a dream midfield for Nottingham Forest in the 2016/17 campaign:

DM – David Vaughan

Vaughan agrees two-year permanent deal

Vaughan is currently preparing for Euro 2016 with Wales and his call-up his testament to his form in a Forest shirt during the 2015/16 campaign.

The 33-year-old is can be considered a veteran now but his influence in the dressing room will help the younger players no end, making him an important part of the Nottingham Forest squad.

His form for the Reds last season has done enough to ensure that he will start next season as a regular in the side and it is worth noting that Vaughan finished last season with the best record of any player in the whole division when it came to tackles per game.

CM – Adlene Guedioura

If Oscar Garcia arrives at the City Ground to be the club’s new manager then this is a transfer that could certainly be realistic this summer.

The Algerian midfielder adhered himself to the Forest faithful during his two years at the club, with a series of robust displays in the middle of the park - and an ability to pick out the top corner of the net from distance.

The 30-year-0ld played under Spanish boss Garcia when he took over at Watford for a short while, before an unfortunate battle with health problems meant that he was forced to stand down as Hornets boss.

Guesdioua has found game time limited at Vicarage Road since their promotion to the Premier League and a summer move back to a club he holds in high regard would certainly excite Forest supporters.

CM – Matty James

Matty James

The Leicester City central midfielder has seen his career stall at the Premier League champions and failed to play at all for the Foxes in their historic, title winning campaign of last season.

The 24-year-old is a product of the Manchester United youth academy and he was a key part of the Leicester team when they won the Sky Bet Championship during the 2013/14 campaign.

Given his lack of football during last season, James could look to move away from the King Power Stadium this summer and a move to the Championship would look realistic for the versatile midfielder.

Given that he was a regular under Nigel Pearson at Leicester City, his new club Derby County could also be interested, making a Forest advance all the more intriguing.

AMC – Henri Lansbury

It remains to be seen whether Nottingham Forest’s captain will still be at the City Ground come the start of the 2016/17 season, or whether he will be playing top flight football somewhere.

Lansbury has a clause in his contract that allows him to talk to Premier League clubs if a bid of £4 million is made, and with just 12 months left on his current deal the Reds may be forced into a sale.

The first task for any new manager who arrives at Nottingham Forest should be to thrash out new terms for the ex-Arsenal man, such is his importance to the Reds and how they play.

Lansbury has come in for some criticism in the past from sections of the Forest crowd but the reality is that when he is played in his natural position he is among the better players in the division.
