Leeds United will be hoping that the appointment of Garry Monk will prove to be a shrewd one. This is his first managerial post since parting ways with Swansea City last year and his arrival has stirred excitement amongst fans.

One of the 38-year old's first jobs will be to turn the mid-table side of last year into a promotion challenging team at long last.

Owner Massimo Cellino has made it perfectly clear that reaching the play-offs is the minimum expectation next season, meaning this summer represents a crucial period for the former Swans coach to hit the ground running.

With midfield being such an important part of any football team, Monk will need to retain some key players in the Whites' engine room, as well as trying his hand at drafting in some reinforcements.

Some moves may be ambitious, but when was the last time a club of this stature made a statement signing?

Considering that, with silly season just around the corner, here's a look at the dream Leeds United midfield under Garry Monk next season.

CM: Toumani Diagouraga

While he may not be a headline-grabber, Toumani Diagouraga is an extremely effective player.

The defensive midfielder is French-born with Malian descent but has played his entire professional career in England - spanning 8 clubs in 12 years.

The energetic midfield powerhouse is brilliant at breaking down attacks as he sits between the midfield and the back four, creating a solid foundation.

Having joined Leeds in January from Brentford and has since cemented his first team space with dominant displays in their midfield.

CM: Leon Britton

Perhaps a player that Monk could tempt to Yorkshire from his old club Swansea.

Leon Britton has been present in the Swans' midfield for a huge number of years now, having joined in 2003 when he was released by West Ham.

Now 13 years on, aged 33, the pass master sees less game time but he remains a gifted technician, keeping the ball ticking over.

He would bring calmness, composure and a fantastic passing range to the Leeds midfield.

Also, his experience would be complemented with the youthful squad and would provide the perfect balance for a successful midfield.

RM: Nathan Dyer

Nathan Dyer

When Nathan Dyer was shipped out on loan to Leicester on deadline day last summer, who would have thought that he would return to parent club Swansea as a Premier League winner?

Outcast by the mid-table Welsh club, the former Southampton man is another who could drop down a league to be reunited with his former boss.

The 28-year-old would almost certainly be afforded first-team opportunities by Leeds need some pace on the wing, lifting backsides off of seats at long last.

It seems an almost perfect match.

LM: Alex Mowatt

Alex Mowatt has been at the club for 12 years and Monk no doubt will be hoping that the talented youngster will remain at the club to take a starting spot in his midfield.

The 21-year old is a vibrant player, able to operate in the middle or on the wing and is invariably a palpable threat from set-pieces.

The former England under-20 international would surely develop more by staying at his boyhood than to take a jump to the Premier League earlier than necessary, as so many have done in the past.

CAM: Lewis Cook

Simply put, keeping a hold of prized asset Lewis Cook is vital to their chances of reaching the play-offs this season.

Leeds have always based their squad around a core homegrown contingent and developing a dynamic between the 19-year old and the aforementioned Mowatt is a mouth watering notion.

There is little doubting the teen's immense talent.

The Football League Young Player of the Year will be the star man in Monk's new-look-midfield, should he resist temptation of a move to the proverbial Promised Land this summer.
