It was a dramatic capitulation which saw the demise of Coventry's promotion bid last season.

From top in December to mid-table mediocrity, courtesy of relegation form post-Christmas.

Tony Mowbray will be determined to mount a better a challenge this year and will need to recruit well over the summer to make this happen. Striker is a key area to target with a replacement for 20-goal Adam Armstrong needed. Centre back is another area which needs bolstering following the release of Aaron Martin and Reda Johnson.

But probably top of the priority list is to add some new faces in the attacking midfield departments. James Maddison and Jacob Murphy both return to parent club Norwich and Ruben Lameiras can be inconsistent so this is an area which needs to be addressed.

If Mowbray captures the right players then he should expect Coventry to be up there competing for promotion next term.

Here is a dream midfield for Coventry next season......

RM: Carl Baker

Former Sky Blues fan favourite Carl Baker has recently admitted that he would relish the chance to return to the Ricoh Arena.

The 33-year-old was released by Milton Keynes at the end of his contract and is now a free agent.

His previous spell with City spanned four years and included 160 appearances.

CM: Romain Vincelot

Vincelot arrived from Leyton Orient last summer and proved to be a shrewd piece of business by Tony Mowbray.

The defensive midfielder is commanding in the centre of the park and has also shown that he can play in defence.

The bearded Frenchman is no stranger to yellow and red cards but he breaks the play down so well in midfield and is comfortable carrying the ball forward too.

The 30-year-old is expected to retain his spot in Mowbray's starting XI next year.

CM: John Fleck

This deal could be very important for Coventry this summer.

At the expiration of his contract, John Fleck has been offered a new deal.

The 24-year-old is mulling over his options with reported interest from his former club Rangers as well as a few Championship teams. Fleck's ability on the ball is far superior to League One level so keeping him at the club would be a real statement of intent.

LM: Jacob Murphy

Jacob Murphy was hit and miss last year but when he was on form, he really showed what he was capable of.

He combined scintillating mazy runs which terrorised defences with average ineffective performances but re-signing him is definitely worth the risk.

Murphy is unlikely to get much first team action at Norwich so dropping down a league is probably his best chance of regular football.

The 21-year-old could be a key asset for Mowbray if he regains his form.

CAM: Jodi Jones

Tony Mowbray could have made his most important signing of the window already.

Jodi Jones spent the latter part of last season on loan at Coventry from Dagenham and Redbridge with the deal being made permanent soon after the season finished.

The 18-year-old East Londoner impressed during his time at the Ricoh Arena and resisted offers from elsewhere to join the Sky Blues in his next step to stardom. With a bit more confidence and encouragement, Jones could turn into a really talented footballer next season.
