It's an exciting time to be a Bristol City fan at the moment with a good squad, young manager and Ashton Gate has been extended, meaning it'll be buzzing next season with a large expectant fan base.

At the start of last season they seemed in trouble under Steve Cotterill struggling to pick up points and at one point resided in the relegation zone.

But Barnsley manager Lee Johnson came in and led them to a comfortable survival.

Their star player was undoubtedly Jonathan Kodjia who bagged 20 goals with the Ivorian one of the most underrated strikers in the Football League.

The one disappointing thing for Bristol City was a lack of goals from midfield with players like Luke Freeman and Marlon Pack struggling to find their feet in front of goal.

The midfield near the end of the season was a diamond with Pack playing in the defensive role, Bryan and Reid in the centre and the impressive Lee Tomlin in attack.

Lee Tomlin bagged six goals since his loan move from Bournemouth as City will be desperate to get him on a permanent deal.

Here is the DREAM midfield for Bristol City under Lee Johnson next season.....

CDM - Liam Bridcutt

Marlon Pack has struggled this season for Bristol City with their defence being very leaky at the beginning of the season.

Whilst the defence is of course at fault, Pack failed to read the game and with it being the most important position in the diamond, they need someone more grit and experience in that position.

Bridcutt is excellent at this level as he proved at Brighton and Hove Albion a number of years ago and Leeds.

He is struggling to get a game at Sunderland but was excellent on loan at Leeds and Bristol City may face a fight for his signature - but the defensive position in midfield needs adding to and Bridcutt would be a good start.

CM - Gary O'Neil

Bristol City signed Gary O'Neil as their first signing of the summer with the experienced midfielder being released by Norwich.

He is certainly no stranger to the Championship, getting promoted from it with QPR, Norwich and West Ham and also played in it with Cardiff and Middlesbrough.

The experienced O'Neil could help young Josh Brownhill mature whilst also help anchor a possible play-off push which he is very used too.

The 33-year-old veteran still has a lot to give and Bristol City will hope his experience will help this young Bristol City side progress.

CM - Josh Brownhill

Josh Brownhill

At only 20 he spent much of last season on loan at Barnsley and played a part in their promotion to the Championship, and also played a big part the year before when Preston were promoted.

He won the Goal of the Year contest at Preston that year as well.

Bristol City had to pay Preston compensation for snapping the 20-year-old up before his contract expiry, and the fans will be hoping it's worth it with Brownhill being renowned for his exquisite passing and vision.

CAM - Lee Tomlin

Tomlin was outstanding for Bristol City when he was loaned in from Bournemouth, scoring some stunning goals and played a big part in keeping them up this season.

He was very impressive for Middlesbrough a couple of seasons ago scoring seven goals as Middlesbrough reached the play-offs, and even though they failed to go up, Tomlin earned a move to Premier League Bournemouth.

Tomlin has everything you want from an attacking midfielder, and would be a fantastic signing for the Bristol outfit.
