Coventry City were looking destined for a top six finish in Sky Bet League One until the turn of the year when their form took something of a nosedive.

The Sky Blues eventually finished in eight position, five points outside of the play-off places and boss Tony Mowbray will be looking for big improvements from the 2016/17 campaign.

The West Midlands-based club are blessed with some exciting young talent and they could well be forced to fight off some interest from teams in higher leagues during the forthcoming transfer window.

Coventry will certainly be looking to fire themselves into play-off contention at the very least next season, which could mean boss Mowbray looks towards adding some firepower to his squad.

Football League World writer Lee Clarke takes a look at a dream front three for Coventry City fans to contemplate in the 2016/17 campaign:

AMR – Jacob Murphy

jacob murphyjacob murphy

The Norwich City winger was on loan at the Sky Blues last season and scored nine goals in 40 games, becoming a firm fan favourite in the process.

Murphy could be handed a lifeline at the Canaries following their relegation to the Sky Bet Championship but if he doesn’t, then Coventry should definitely look to swoop yet again.

Murphy has pace in abundance and has risen through the youth ranks at Carrow Road to develop into a real star for the future.

The 21-year-old has been out on numerous loan spells and he will now be looking to settle at one club in the near future.

AML – Josh Murphy

Josh Murphy

Josh is the twin brother of Jacob and if Coventry are serious about promotion next season then they could chance an ambitious arm towards a swoop for both Murphy brothers.

Josh was on loan at MK Dons last season and was one of the club’s standout performers in an otherwise poor campaign for the relegated outfit.

He netted five goals during his 42 appearances but the main aspect of the loan spell was the chance to play regular football in the Sky Bet Championship.

A very similar player to his sibling, Murphy has actually already played 22 times for the Canaries and he would be a real coup to the Sky Blues.

ST – Matty Taylor

Bristol Rovers striker Taylor is the man who fired Darrell Clarke’s men to promotion into League One, with a stoppage time winner over Dagenham and Redbridge on the final day of the League Two season.

It was the striker’s 27th goal of the season which was impressive considering it was his first season playing football in the Football League.

Prior to joining Rovers he played for Forest Green Rovers where he netted 22 goals in 96 before signing on at the Memorial Stadium in 2013.

In 94 games for Darrell Clarke’s men he has netted an impressive 47 goals and it seems inevitable that he will move on next season.

Taylor could be a solid signing for Coventry City and with the Murphy twins either side he would certainly be given plenty of chances to score even more goals.

Coventry City fans would you welcome this three starting the 2016/17 campaign in attack? Who else would you like to see instead?
