It's a credit to Gary Rowett and his squad that Millwall went into the final day of the Championship season with their top six dreams still alive. 

In the end, results elsewhere ensured they fell short of the play-offs – finishing five points back in ninth – but it's important they take the positives from what was a hugely impressive 2021/22 campaign.

The Lions don't have the sort of financial might that many of the sides with similar aspirations do and so they'll need to be smart this summer to ensure they can keep pace next term.

With that in mind, we've highlighted the dilemmas facing Rowett in the upcoming window...

How to replace Jed Wallace

Millwall talisman Jed Wallace is yet to make a decision about this future but it has seemed as though he was set for the exit door for a little while now.

The winger is out of contract at the Den and reportedly has West Bromwich Albion chasing him.

Assuming Wallace does depart, finding a way to replace him without much money to spend is going to be key to the club's success next term.

Whether that is via free agent signings, loan deals or players like Tyler Burey stepping up remains to be seen but it's a problem that Rowett simply has to solve.

Which loan players to try and re-sign

The south London club were reliant on loan players last season – with the likes of Benik Afobe and Dan Ballard proving particularly impressive acquisitions.

Sheffield United duo Ollie Burke and Luke Freeman were less convincing (for different reasons) while the Lions didn't see the best of Sheyi Ojo.

The Millwall squad needs a fair bit of work over the coming months and Rowett will have to decide which loan players to pursue new moves for and how hard to push.

There have been suggestions that both Afobe and Ballard could be sold this summer but it remains to be seen whether the pair are within the Lions' reach.

How to flesh out his squad on a budget

While replacing Wallace and re-signing loan players will be high on Millwall's list of priorities, more than just two or three new signings are needed this summer.

The whole squad needs to be fleshed out, with added depth needed everywhere apart from between the sticks.

Rowett needs to assess how best to add that on his limited budget.

Whether to give Mahlon Romeo another chance 

Right-back Mahlon Romeo once looked an exciting future prospect but his career at the Den has faltered and he spent last season out on loan with Portsmouth.

With that spell done, the defender will return to the club this summer and that leaves Rowett with a decision to make.

Does he look to offload Romeo and accept any reasonable offer that comes in to ensure the money can be reinvested?

Or would it be better to be patient and see if the 26-year-old does have something to offer after a season away?

It's a dilemma but you'd imagine the former is more likely.
