Huddersfield Town fell just short of promotion back to the Premier League on Sunday as Nottingham Forest beat them 1-0 in the Championship play-off final but Carlos Corberan cut a determined figure after the game as he backed his team to use the disappointment as motivation next season.

The Spaniard will likely waste no time getting his preparations for 2022/23 started – such is the fervour with which he coaches – but before the football restarts, the Terriers have a summer transfer window to contend with.

Huddersfield's recruitment under Corberan has been hugely impressive and has seen them cut the wage bill significantly while cheaply bringing in players that have contributed to their success over the past nine months.

But they cannot fly under the radar as they did last summer and there are some problems that need solving at the John Smith's Stadium.

With that in mind, here are the dilemmas facing Carlos Corberan this summer transfer window at Huddersfield...

Finding a replacement for Levi Colwill

Chelsea loanee Levi Colwill has been a phenomenal addition and finding a replacement for him will be no easy task with the 19-year-old now set to return to Stamford Bridge.

Colwill deserves no blame for the own-goal in Sunday's final, with the centre-back forced to play the ball due to James Garner's probing cross and Ryan Yates' darting run.

That Premier League clubs are now sniffing around the defender illustrates the talent of the player Huddersfield have to replace over the next few months.

Colwill now looks out of reach for Huddersfield but Corberan will have to decide whether to pursue new deals for any of their other 2021/22 loan signings.

Tino Anjorin, another Chelsea loanee, could be someone they pursue after his spell at the club was hampered by injury while Danel Sinani has been a very useful addition but may be tough to get after Norwich City's relegation to the Championship.

The Lewis O'Brien situation

Falling short of promotion was always going to boost other clubs hopes of prizing away the Terriers' best assets and Lewis O'Brien is at the top of that list.

Reports emerged ahead of the final that Leeds United were keen to trigger the £10 million release clause in O'Brien's contract.

Corberan suggested after Sunday's defeat that he did not think any of his players wanted to leave the Yorkshire club but the prospect of Premier League football may be too much for the tenacious midfielder to resist.

The dilemma for the Spanish coach will be how to replace him and how to use the funds they receive to best improve the squad.

What to do about Josh Koroma

Before injury struck him down in 2020/21, Josh Koroma looked to have found his feet at Huddersfield and was oozing confidence but a few years on, the 23-year-old appears down the pecking order.

As we've seen in the past, the talent is there but getting the best out of him does seem to have been a problem recently.

Koroma is out of contract this summer but the club have a one-year option, which Corberan has to weigh up whether or not to trigger.

Whether to keep any of the other out-of-contract players at the club

Koroma is not the only player out of contract this summer and with the 2021/22 campaign now wrapped up, the Huddersfield boss has some decisions to make about who he wants to keep around.

Fraizer Campbell, Alex Vallejo, Naby Sarr, Jamal Blackman, and Reece Brown are all players that could depart unless action is taken to keep them at the club.

Whether to keep hold of Rarmani Edmonds-Green

Rarmani Edmonds-Green played a vital role as Rotherham United returned to the Championship in 2021/22 but is now set to return to Huddersfield with his loan spell up.

It would be no surprise if the Millers made another move for the young defender but Corberan will surely want to run the rule over him first.

The 23-year-old has certainly improved since leaving to join Rotherham and may want to stake his claim to replace Colwill.
