For years now, we’ve seen Derby County struggle to really make a name for themselves in the Championship.

They’ve somewhat become renowned as the team that nearly get to the play-offs but generally fall at the final hurdle.

The Rams haven't really been there this season in the slightest, barring a slight revival when Steve McClaren first took charge for his second spell.

But as we all know, that ended rather abruptly and for the Rams, they were left staring down the barrel of another disappointing Championship campaign.

But moving forward, it’s important that former Birmingham boss Gary Rowett gets the best out of his squad before he thinks about splashing the cash and bringing other players in.

And there’s one man we at the FLW think should be stepping up more than most over the coming year and that’s midfielder Will Hughes.

The England U21 international has admitted himself that he’s had a poor campaign this time out and it’s pretty hard to disagree.

He’s gone from a man that has been linked with moves to some of the best in the world to struggling to get into a Derby side, that couldn’t put together a win for love nor money.

It’s a downward spiral that shows just how easy it is, as a young English player, to get lost in the vacuum of talent that is constantly emerging at this level and above.

Look at the likes of Marcus Rashford and Tammy Abraham - both players that have taken their chances this season with both hands and have propelled themselves into the national spotlight.

That’s the sort of thing we need to be seeing from Hughes next time out.

That ambition we saw from him three years ago and the desire to be the best at this level to potentially earn a move to a Premier League club.

He’s got the talent so this really is make-or-break for Hughes when August eventually rolls around…
