Coventry City striker Amadou Bakayoko has shown a real positive response to the comments about his form from manager Mark Robins, following the Sky Blues recent goal draught.

The Sky Blues had gone three successive matches without scoring in League One when they were held to a goalless draw at MK Dons a few weeks ago, which is a run that meant Coventry slipped out of the play-off places and were in danger of not being able to build on their strong start to the campaign.

Bakayoko was brought into the starting line-up by Robins for that game against the MK Dons in place of the injured Matt Godden, but the forward could not really stamp his authority on the game, failing to provide a real focal point for the Sky Blues and being guilty of missing a few chances that came his way.

Following the goalless draw at MK Dons Robins, speaking to the Coventry Telegraph, Robins offered a challenge to Bakayoko to start proving he can be a reliable scorer and offer a more effective presence up front for the Sky Blues, saying: “If you were going to build a striker, a No.9, you’d look at his build and you might just say, that’s what it’s going to look like. But he needs to understand that that’s him.

"He allows people to move into his space. There’s not enough aggression in his game and that’s something that he has to sort out. He has to sort that out for himself."

Bakayoko appears to have responded to that challenge over the last two matches, with the 23-year-old starting the Sky Blues' 2-1 win against Fleetwood Town at St Andrews and managing to help Robins' side come back from a goal behind to secure a much-needed win, netting the crucial equaliser on 59 minutes with a predatory finish.

The striker then followed that performance up with another impressive display in the Sky Blues' clash at Peterborough United on Saturday, with Bakayoko making it two goals in two matches, having scored just one in nine games prior to the last few weeks, with another composed finish to put Robins' side ahead after 12 minutes - and he continued to offer more of a reliable presence throughout until he brought off on 77 minutes.

Robins will probably be delighted with the way that Bakayoko has responded to his challenge following the MK Dons game, and it is crucial now that having established himself in the side, the 23-year-old manages to maintain his recent form on a consistent basis.

Coventry could well elect to bring in another striker during the January window, with Godden injured, but with both Bakayoko and the recently returned Maxime Biamou starting to find some form up front in the last few weeks, the need for another striker does not seem as vital as it did a few weeks ago.

Bakayoko has shown to Robins that he can respond and show character when he is questioned, and that will be vital for him to carry on doing if he is going to convince his manager that he is the right striker to lead the line for the Sky Blues, and help fire Coventry to promotion.
