It's safe to say that it's been a year to forget for Sheffield Wednesday, as they continue to struggle in the Championship.

Garry Monk's side had once occupied a spot in the Championship play-off positions, but a dismal run of form since the turn of the New Year has seen them slide down the second tier standings at an alarming rate.

The Owls are now sat 15th in the Championship table, and will be hoping they can finish this year's campaign strongly when football does return.

Due to recent off-the-field events, the season has been temporarily suspended, with no scheduled return date being put in place as of yet.

Speaking in an interview with Yorkshire Post, Owls winger Adam Reach issued his verdict on the departure of Steve Bruce earlier into this season, and labelled this season as 'topsy-turvy'.

"It’s been very topsy-turvy.

"Losing Steve Bruce was a big blow because the fans and the players collectively had an optimism for this season. We brought in some good faces that improved the squad and the harmony and got off to a good start.

"We were optimistic again. Until Christmas we were where we wanted to be. For some reason form fell away and so did players’ performances."

Reach was remaining optimistic that they can finish this year's campaign strongly, but understood the fans' frustrations, with a lack of consistency being highlighted as one of the main reasons behind their poor results since the turn of the New Year.

"Unfortunately the consistency’s not there. I think that’s what leaves the majority of fans frustrated. You can do all the right things but if you’re not consistent it’s a problem.

"That’s what’s let us down, not just this season but in seasons past. All we can do is make sure we come back in the best possible condition for the final nine games.

"We find ourselves in mid-table but, if we get the chance to finish the season, who knows what can happen?"

The Verdict:

It's good to see that he's acknowledging their poor showings since the turn of the New Year.

Sheffield Wednesday haven't been anywhere near good enough for a number of games now, and they'll know that results simply have to improve at the earliest of opportunities.

I still think that Garry Monk is the right man for the job at Hillsborough, but he needs his key players like Reach to recapture their best run of form.

If that can happen, then the Owls will find some much-needed consistency in their performances heading towards the conclusion of this year's campaign.
