Bristol City saw their five-game unbeaten run come to an end on Wednesday night as they crashed to an emphatic 4-1 defeat at the hands of Championship leaders West Brom.

Lee Johnson's side struggled to compete with the Baggies who dominated all aspects of the match, with the Robins unable to recover after falling two goals down at the interval with Kieran Gibbs and Matheus Pereira both on target for the hosts.

Famara Diedhiou then pulled one back for the Ashton Gate outfit with 10 minutes remaining, but this only spurred on the Baggies who added a further two strikes through attacking duo Hal Robson-Kanu and Charlie Austin.

It was a disappointing evening for Bristol City who would have viewed the clash as the perfect litmus test to indicate where they stand currently, but it quickly became clear that West Brom are playing on a different level to Johnson's side.

However, City were not exactly helped by the fact their defensive performance was littered with errors, and centre-back Bailey Wright was the man made to pay the price for this as he was substituted at the interval in Johnson's re-shuffle.

Despite looking strong in possession of the ball, Wright struggled against West Brom's attacking unit during a high-pressure first half, and his half-time exit from the match would have dented his confidence after re-entering the side in recent matches.

The 27-year-old will know he remains an important player to Bristol City as a result of his strong leadership abilities, but his performance against Slaven Bilic's side suggested he is not currently at the defensive level to play a key role in his side's promotion push.

Wright has been re-included in the side as a result of Tomas Kalas' injury suffered on international duty, but his third league appearance of the season in the same way as the others, with the defender being substituted before full-time.

The Australia international must now be wondering what the future holds for him in this Bristol City side, as he will surely be aware that it would not go down well among Robins fans if he is again included in the starting line-up over the weekend.

Wright must now accept that he could lose his place in the team against Huddersfield on Saturday, but he can still ensure he has an impact at City between now and the end of the season by using his leadership skills to benefit the side.
