Birmingham City striker Alvaro Gimenez will surely feel that he has a point to prove ahead of Saturday's clash with Cardiff City, having been left out of Pep Clotet's starting line-up for the Blues' last two games.

Gimenez has started the season as one of the most important players for Birmingham, with the striker making 12 appearances for the Blues in the Championship so far this term - and Clotet had elected to start the 28-year-old up front with Lukas Jutkiewicz in seven out of nine games, leading up to the last two games against Blackburn Rovers and Luton Town.

However, following Birmingham slipping to a fourth defeat in five Championship matches in the 1-0 defeat at Leeds United a few weeks ago, Clotet has decided to drop Gimenez to the bench with Kerim Mrabti taking the striker's place - and that decision has somewhat made a positive impact with the Blues securing back to back wins at St Andrews.

The main reason why Clotet has surely decided to drop Gimenez to the bench in the last two matches, has been the 28-year-old's lack of attacking output so far this season, as he looks to adapt to English football following his move from Spanish side Almeria in the summer.

The striker was brought in the summer to help try and bridge some of the goals lost by the departure of last season's top scorer Che Adams, who moved on to Premier League Southampton, but so far Gimenez has managed to score just once in the league in the Blues' 2-0 win against Barnsley back in August.

That has not helped the Blues improve their form in front of goal, with Clotet's side so far this season only managing to score 14 goals in their 14 matches, which is by a distance the fewest out of any of the sides currently in the top half of the division - and that is something that Clotet's side must address as the season progresses if they are to push for the play-offs.

Clotet will be hopeful that by taking Gimenez out of the side for the last two games, he will have given the striker some added motivation to prove a point a make a real difference when called upon either from the bench or from the start - and if the 28-year-old can respond in a positive way then he will soon re-establish himself back in the Blues' starting line-up.

Having had the first few months of the season to get to grips with life in the Championship, Gimenez now needs to start showing the sort of form he did for Almeria last campaign - and with the January transfer window approaching the forward will be wanting to show to Clotet that he does not need to bring in another striker.
