The goalkeeping position at Villa Park is one area on the pitch that no one really knows what the future holds, as loanee Sam Johnstone has returned to Manchester United.
Manager Steve Bruce will be pursuing a number of targets for the man between the posts but the ‘keeper who has gone back to Old Trafford is favourite to make a permanent switch to the Midlands.
However, the boss needs a back-up plan if that doesn’t materialise as he wishes and should swoop for AFC Bournemouth’s £213,ooo-rated Ryan Allsop.
The 24-year-old made his only senior appearance of last campaign on the final day in the one-apiece draw to Leicester City, paving the way for him to depart the Vitality Stadium and head elsewhere.
He spent most of the 2015/16 season on loan at League Two outfit Portsmouth and prior to that it was Coventry City; his first temporary switch away from the south coast since joining Bournemouth in 2013 was a spell at Wycombe Wanderers.
Having begun his career in the Midlands at West Bromwich Albion and being born in Birmingham, Allsop’s family still live in the area meaning he would surely would not shy from a move to the region.
Finances may not be a problem for Bruce either with Chinese owner Tony Xia backing him all the way until they return to the top-flight, however, acquiring Ryan Allsop would definitely prove to be value for money – he is a solid goalkeeper to have in the Championship.
Villa supporters, do you need a new goalkeeper? Would you prefer Sam Johnstone over Allsop? Who could be a likely signing if the club can’t obtain their key target? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!
