Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel have seemingly reacted swiftly to the loss of Ethan Pinnock to Brentford with a move for Leeds United defender Aapo Halme close to being finalised, according Football Insider.

Halme, 21, was used mainly in the U23's last season, with the 6ft 5 defender making four first team appearances in his first season at Elland Road, having joined from HJK Helsinki in the summer of 2018.

So would Halme prove to be an adequate replacement for departed Pinnock?

We discuss........

Kealan Hughes

"Barnsley were always going to struggle to find a player of similar quality to Pinnock but this move seems a strange one, and it is unlikely Halme will be able to step up to the plate.

"Pinnock had everything a defender needs. Pace, awareness and he was brilliant in the air and in the tackle. Halme by comparison is still young and learning his trade, and next season he could get bullied by some Championship strikers.

"The biggest concern is his inexperience, he played just a handful of times for Leeds and therefore is still not used to the rigours and demands of Championship football, and he could struggle to adapt to the pace of the game.

"Added to that, he will be part of a defence that has lost three key players in Pinnock, Lindsay and Davies and therefore it could take the entire back four a while to gel and settle, which could also affect his performances."

Jacob Potter

"He’s the ideal replacement, and is somewhat of a coup for Daniel Stendel’s side heading into next season.

"Halme is a player with potential, and he’d arrive at Oakwell with a point to prove in the Championship, which makes this a smart bit of business for the Tykes.

"He’s already got experience of playing in the Championship after being called into the Leeds squad by Bielsa to cover injuries, which seemed to get the better of the Whites in some crucial games as they missed out on promotion.

"But he’ll be eager to show Marcelo Bielsa that he can perform to a high standard at this level, and that can only be a good thing for Barnsley if they were to land his signature.

"Pinnock has left a sizeable void in the heart of the defence, but I believe that Halme is a more than adequate replacement for him."

George Brooks

"I think this could be a good signing for Barnsley.

"Halme is a talented player, but he probably isn't going to get a chance in the first team at Elland Road next season ahead of Liam Cooper or Pontus Jansson - especially now Leeds have signed another central defender in Ben White from Brighton.

"Leeds won't be able to guarantee him regular first-team football next season, whereas he could become a key player for Barnsley.

"I think he'd be a good long-term replacement for Ethan Pinnock and I don't see why he can't make an impact at Oakwell.

"He didn't get much of a chance for Leeds last season, but he's still a very good defender and he showed in flashes that he has the physical qualities to cope with second tier football.
