Sheffield Wednesday have enjoyed a terrific season so far and a resurgence under new boss Carlos Carvalhal and the new owners.

A solid defence inherited from last season has been bolstered, and some attacking options have been added giving the side extra creativity and goal threat.

They have earned some fantastic results this season and recently thrashed Arsenal 3-0 in the Capital One Cup, in one of the best nights at Hillsborough in a while.

That is what Carvalhal wants, a rocking stadium full of fans who have something to cheer for after the recent turbulence at the club.

Carvalhal has built on the good way of Stuart Gray and turned them into contenders for the top six, whilst some will doubt they have the squad depth to compete with the top teams, if they can keep their first-team fit and add some decent players in the summer, they will certainly be contenders come the end of the season.

Here's the BEST Sheffield Wednesday XI under Carlos Carvalhal.....

GK - Keiren Westwood

Often touted as the best goalkeeper outside the Premier League, the Irishman made team of the year last year, made ever more impressive by Wednesday's average finish.

He was the man behind the second best defence in the league in more ways than one, pulling off a number of stunning saves to secure Wednesday a comfortable mid-table finish.

Linked with a Premier League move and playing international football he has chosen to stay, at the Owls.

Westwood is maintaining his form from last season, and he'll no doubt help Wednesday challenge for the top six.

LB - Daniel Pudil

The left-back is on loan from Watford and has made quite the impression since his arrival with his trademark marauding runs, and his ability to help with the defensive effort.

He has been crucial in Wednesday's recent good form and tightness at the back.

His goal against Preston showed he offers a potent attacking threat and the clean sheets they've been keeping, also shows him in a good light defensively.

CB - Glenn Loovens

Loovens and partner Lees was the second best centre back pairing in the Championship last year, and they needed to be as their attack was struggling to score goals.

He brings experience to the back-line and has helped with the maturity of young Tom Lees and their partnership is growing stronger every year, and they are currently on a 10 match unbeaten run, mainly down to how tight they've been at the back and the experienced Loovens takes credit for it.

CB - Tom Lees

Since his move to Wednesday from Leeds, he is one of the most improved centre backs in the country and is touted as one of the best centre backs in the league.

His partnership with Loovens has been crucial to Wednesday's rise under Carvalhal and their transformation to genuine promotion contenders.

Lees has been solid this season helping his side keeping clean sheets for fun, including one against Arsenal.

RB - Jack Hunt

Hunt has struggled to break into the first team at Crystal Palace since his arrival there in 2013, and has since been subjected to several loan deals in this time.

Most have them have been unspectacular but his time at Wednesday has been more impressive.

His form has been great and like fellow full back Pudil, he has been very useful as an attacking threat and improved the defensive part of his game, which had been missing in previous seasons at other clubs.

CM - Jose Semedo

The Portuguese midfielder has had many injury problems during his time at Hillsborough, which is a shame as he's usually one of their best players.

With Bannan and Lee in the midfield they have been very industrious this season and Semedo seems to be growing in confidence every game.

Semedo has been consistent this season showing good range in his passing game and protecting the defence.

CM - Kieran Lee

The former Manchester United graduate brings some much needed experience in the middle of the park for Wednesday, and has a good partnership going with Semedo this season.

He shows a good attacking threat and has been lining up well with the front men.

Semedo seems to be slotting into Carvalhal's system perfectly and will provide an attacking threat, after he got six goals last season.

His link up with Bannan and Semedo is crucial to Wednesday's success.

LM - Barry Bannan

The midfielder has signed on a permanent move from Premier League Crystal Palace after finding his opportunities limited.

He suffered the same problem at Aston Villa but is now getting regular first team football at Wednesday.

Bannan has made a steady start and is already causing defences problems and creating chances.

The Scottish international has a number of assists this year and must maintain form if Wednesday are going to go up this year.

RM - Ross Wallace

The Scottish midfielder renowned for his inconsistency in his career has been a revelation this year.

Does his defensive duties and is full of running and has been a constant menace down the right scoring goals and assisting his teammates.

He scored an excellent goal against Arsenal in the Capital One Cup and also was named PFA Player of the season in September, and is consistently continuing this form.

If he can keep it up which he's failed in the past Wednesday will be dangerous in attack this season.

CAM - Fernando Forestieri

The Italian joined from Watford in the summer and has brought all his flare with him, and his technical ability has impressed fans and pundits alike.

He has provided goals and assists since his arrival and scored the winner on Saturday against Nottingham Forest to help extend Wednesday's unbeaten run to 10 games.

Forestieri, like Wallace, won the PFA player of the year for October, making it the first time Wednesday have won back to back PFA player of the month awards.

If he can keep scoring and getting assists, Wednesday will bolster their goal tally from last season.

ST - Lucas Joao

The young Portuguese striker has been a revelation this year under Carvahal, and appears to be a hot prospect.

Scoring league goals like the one against Rotherham is slowly making him a first team player ahead of the inconsistent Nuhiu.

His excellent goal against Arsenal helped him burst on the scene, and it could be a very good season for the young starlet leading the line and more importantly a promotion challenge.
