“The best…” – New Ipswich Town signing opens up on Leeds United exit

New Ipswich Town arrival Leif Davis has revealed he left Leeds United as he felt moving to Portman Road was “the best step in my career at this time” due to the offer of regular game time.

The League One club have been linked with the 22-year-old for some time now but announced the signing of the defender yesterday on a permanent deal – signing a three-year deal with the option of a one-year extension.

Ipswich’s pursuit of Davis looked to have been made more difficult due to injuries to the likes of Stuart Dallas and Junior Firpo at Elland Road but they have got it over the line ahead of the season opener against Bolton Wanderers.

Speaking to club media, the defender has revealed why he opted to leave Elland Road and join the Tractor Boys.

He said: “I think this was the best step in my career at this time – coming in to play games, help the team get back up the ladder, keep on striving to get back up the leagues.

“The most important thing for me is to get the games in and, like I say, help the team. Do everything I can.

“I always give my all when I’m on the pitch. The main thing is to meet the fans, 20-odd thousand every week is just incredible so I can’t wait to meet everyone.”

Davis’ arrival gives Kieran McKenna real strength in depth at left wing-back with fellow summer arrival Greg Leigh and Matt Penney also in the squad.

The Verdict

This signing looks like a real coup for Ipswich and Davis’ hunger to play is certainly a boost for the League One club.

Under Marcelo Bielsa it seemed as though he was close to breaking through at Elland Road but he’s not really had much of a chance since the arrival of Jesse Marsch.

The American coach spoke highly of him during pre-season but it seems the club felt the best thing was to let him leave and play regular football elsewhere.

The Tractor Boys are the beneficiaries while with Leigh also arriving this summer, they boast some hugely impressive options on that left flank and real variety to allow McKenna to tweak things against different opposition.
