Middlesbrough are undergoing a huge transformation this summer.

Neil Warnock knows exactly what he's looking for and that means bringing in players who know English football and the Championship extremely well.

If they're to do that then they may want to tap into some of the previous successes that the club have enjoyed in the transfer market.

Signing players from the domestic market has certainly served the Teessiders well over the years with the club boasting some impressing English players during the last 15 years, but who would make Middlesbrough's best XI team?

Here is Middlesbrough's 1-11 built on players from these shores.

He may have only spent one season at Middlesbrough but Marcus Bettinelli is a justified choice as the club's best English goalkeeper of the past 15 years.

Players such as Dimi Konstantopoulous, Darren Randolph and Victor Valdes are all notable stoppers from during that time but when it comes to players from England it seems that the former Fulham stopper is the man.

Bettinelli joined the club on a season-long loan last term and while he was prone to an occasional error, he was certainly the club's first choice and made some impressive saves along the way.

Now looking for a new challenge, it'll be interesting to see where he ends up next.

Another player who only spent a year with the club.

Luke Young arrived in the summer of 2007 for a fee of £2.5million and proved himself as one of England's best right-backs during his 12 months at the club.

12 months on and Young was sold to Aston Villa for a profit, a decision that fans weren't all too pleased about.

His most memorable moment in a Middlesbrough shirt came in a home clash with Tottenham Hotspur when he fired one into the top corner of the net from all of 35 yards in one of the best goals that the Riverside Stadium has ever seen.

Before his recent spell as manager of the club we have to remember that Jonathan Woodgate spent plenty of time as a player.

After moving to the Riverside Stadium on an initial loan deal in 2006, Woodgate made the move permanent one year later after bringing his Real Madrid nightmare to an end.

Time with Tottenham Hotspur and Stoke City followed before the central defender moved back to Teesside in 2012.

He spent four years with the club in a variety of roles and was a central off-field role as the club thrived under Aitor Karanka.

There's an argument to say that Middlesbrough didn't see the very best of Jonathan Woodgate but there's no doubt that he has to be one of the best English players to feature for the club.

A central defender who is the pride and joy of Middlesbrough's academy side.

Nephew of chairman Steve, Ben Gibson has certainly made a name in his own right after establishing himself as one of the most reliable defenders that the Teessiders have seen in recent years.

After several loan spells away, Gibson became a mainstay in the club's defence under Aitor Karanka and even stuck around to help the club to try and secure an immediate return to the Premier League after suffering relegation.

An ill-fated spell with Burnley followed but since moving to Norwich City things have really taken off and as a result Gibson looks set to for a new opportunity in the Premier League with Daniel Farke's newly-promoted side.

Who else would be pick at left-back, really?

George Friend moved to Middlesbrough for a bargain fee in 2012 in a deal which many supporters hardly batted an eyelid at, however since then he really established himself as a modern day club legend.

Friend spent eight years at the Riverside Stadium and played a key role in the club's promotion to the Premier League as well as being a leader and consistent performer in the years that have followed.

Now with Birmingham City, the time was right for Friend to move on but there's no doubt that his eight years with the club were memorable.

A player who became a consistent Middlesbrough man during his three and a half years at the club.

O'Neil arrived at the Riverside Stadium in 2007 and became one of Gareth Southgate's most reliable performers in the club's two years in the Premier League.

Instead of jumping ship, the midfielder stuck around and battled to try and get the club promoted back to the top flight in the years that followed, but unfortunately the club fell short.

While O'Neil went on to join the likes of West Ham United, there's no doubt that O'Neil's work rate and technical quality made him a real asset.

It's very rare that a player holds club favourite status with two North-East rivals, but Grant Leadbitter has certainly managed it.

The midfielder came through the ranks with Sunderland before enjoying a spell with Ipswich Town, however it was in 2012 when he completed his move to the Riverside Stadium.

After completing that switch, few would have imagined how big an impact he would make as Leadbitter led Middlesbrough's team to promotion under Aitor Karanka.

A whole-hearted performer, Leadbitter is one of the most popular players of the last decade and that deserves a place in our side.

The only current player who makes our list.

Jonny Howson enjoyed an excellent career with Leeds United and Norwich City before moving to Middlesbrough in 2017.

Since then there's no doubt that the midfielder has been one of the club's best, most consistent performers in the years that have followed.

Now 33 years of age, Howson is showing little sign of slowing down and that's why the midfielder continues to be one of the first names on Neil Warnock's teamsheet as they prepare for the new season ahead.

Middlesbroughs' boy wonder was more than just a talented youngster, in fact, he was probably the best Englishman to feature for the club since the turn of the decade.

Downing came through the ranks as a prodigious talent and quickly made his mark under Steve McClaren during that memorable era of Carling Cup victories and runs to the UEFA Cup final.

With Middlesbrough struggling to retain their top flight status, Downing moved on and really established himself as a top Premier League player with the likes of Aston Villa, Liverpool and West Ham United before returning to the club in 2015.

Downing then played a big role in helping the club into the Premier League, before helping them again in the Championship before moving on two years ago.

A player who was a really popular figure during his time at the club.

Patrick Bamford first endeared himself to the Middlesbrough fans during the 2014-15 campaign when his goalscoring exploits were almost enough to help the club to promotion via the play-offs.

After ill-fated loan spell with Burnley and Norwich City, Bamford returned to Teesside in 2017 and hit the goal trail once again before being tempted away by a move to Leeds United.

Now an established top flight player, there's no doubt that Middlesbrough supporters begrudge the decision to allow Bamford to leave as he would almost certainly have continued to thrive if he had stayed in red.

Another player who deserves credit for his record in the Championship.

Jordan Rhodes was one of the best strikers in the EFL during his time with Huddersfield Town, before moving to Middlesbrough in 2016.

His time on Teesside didn't exactly go to plan but he still managed to score some valuable goals along the way with his misfortune being more down to the change in circumstances at the club.

Since then he has moved on to Sheffield Wednesday and is now back with Huddersfield Town where he'll be hoping to become the player that we once knew and admired.
