Leeds United are hoping to see out the 2019-2020 season with promotion to the Premier League after a 16-year absence.

It is hard to believe that United have spent less than a quarter of this Millennium so far in England’s top-flight following their untimely relegation from the Premier League back in 2004.

Since then an abundance of players have come and gone from Elland Road, some providing fans with great memories whereas others not being so impressive.

With football suspended until at least 30th April we are working out the best Leeds United XI since the turn of the Millennium, and today we start this by turning our attention to the goalkeepers.

Here we take a look at the four best goalkeepers to have graced Elland Road since 2000 and at the end, we will ask you to vote for your Leeds United goalkeeper of the Millennium.

Nigel Martyn (2000-2003)

Come the turn of the millennium, Nigel Martyn was already established as a firm favourite with the Elland Road faithful after joining the club from Crystal Palace back in 1996.

During his time at Leeds, the 53-year-old helped Leeds reach the semi-final of the UEFA Cup in 2000 and the same stage of the Champions League the following season, as David O’Leary’s men took England and Europe by storm.

Leeds also finished third in the Premier League in the 1999-2000 season, finished fourth the following year, and kept 18 clean sheets during the 2001-2002 campaign with Martyn between the sticks.

Martyn would make 250 appearances in total for Leeds before leaving for Everton in 2003.

Paul Robinson (2000-2004)

Paul Robinson had only made 28 first-team appearances for the Whites before he became Terry Venables' first-choice goalkeeper for the 2002-2003 season.

Despite an alarming 15th placed finish, Robinson was one of Leeds' standout players that season and kept 10 clean sheets in his first full season as No.1 for the club.

Robinson would feature in 36 of Leeds' 38 league games as they were relegated from the Premier League in the 2003-2004 but would take centre-stage in one of United's happier memories from that campaign, scoring a bullet header against Swindon Town in the League Cup.

The goalkeeper would leave the Whites in 2004 for Tottenham and would go on to win 41 caps for England.

Casper Ankergren (2007-2010)

Initially joining on loan in January 2007, Ankergren's first taste of English football was relegation to League One with the Whites, but it would be in the third tier he would really make a name for himself at Elland Road.

The Dane would establish himself as United’s number one following their drop into League One and would remain as the first-choice goalkeeper for the majority of his time at Elland Road before leaving for Brighton in 2010.

Ankergren kept goal in Leeds’ famous FA Cup win at Old Trafford in January 2010, pulling off a string of remarkable saves as the Whites foiled the reigning Premier League champions.

The 40-year-old would repeat his heroics at White Hart Lane in the following round, saving a Jermaine Defoe penalty to force Tottenham Hotspur to a replay.

In 138 appearances for the Whites, the Dane kept 51 clean sheets and featured 29 times in Leeds’ promotion winning campaign of 2009-2010.

Rob Green (2016-2017)

The former England man arrived at Elland Road during the summer of 2016 as Garry Monk looked to build a squad capable of reaching the Championship play-offs.

Green’s Leeds debut didn’t quite go to plan when he was arguably at fault for Nedum Onuha's goal just four minutes in against Queens Park Rangers, as Monk's Leeds slumped to an opening day 3-0 defeat at Loftus Road.

From there, however, Green’s performances only got better featuring in all 46 of Leeds Championship games as they just missed out on the play-offs.

The former West Ham man kept 15 clean sheets for Leeds during his only campaign at Elland Road and will be remembered for his memorable penalty save against Sheffield Wednesday in February 2017.

Green left Leeds after just one campaign after Felix Wiedwald's arrival in the summer of 2018 and would spend one season with Huddersfield Town before seeing out his career with Chelsea.
