Lee Johnson has backed Luke O'Nien to continue impressing in the heart of Sunderland's defence.

The Black Cats have endured something of a defensive injury crisis of late which means that the head coach has had to shuffle his pack in order to plug the gaps created by those injury woes.

O'Nien is one player who is no stranger to being used in different positions with the 26-year-old slotting into central defence in recent weeks.

With a tough clash against Crewe Alexandra coming up Johnson was discussing O'Nien's impact and has backed him to continue being the ultimate team player.

As quoted by the Northern Echo, Johnson said: “I think he could be the best utility player I’ve ever seen.

"I’ve still not see him at right-back, but he’s been outstanding at centre-half and was very good in an attacking-midfield role.

“What he does that impresses me so much is that he’s all-in.

"Every single action, he’s all-in. Even when he falls over, he falls over with passion and intensity! It’s credit to him and his professionalism, and he really epitomises what you want from the personality of your team.”

The verdict

There's no doubt that Luke O'Nien is a crucial player for Sunderland.

He's been used in so many different positions this season that's something that could prove to be vital for the Black Cats as they continue to tackle the hectic fixture schedule.

O'Nien has certainly looked comfortable in central defence and it's likely he'll stay there for the short-term at least.
