Leeds United confirmed yesterday that captain Liam Cooper has signed a new five-year contract with the club, extending his stay at Elland Road until 2024.

The 28-year-old has been an important player for Leeds over the past few years and has been rewarded for his progress with a new deal, which is reported to be worth around £20,000-a-week.

The centre-back joined Leeds from Chesterfield in 2014 and has gone on to make 165 appearances for the Whites in all competitions, scoring six goals.

The defender has played a key role in Leeds' positive start to the new season and has started five of their six matches in the Championship.

In the latest FLW Six Pointer, we discuss Leeds' decision to offer Cooper a new contract in more detail, including whether it was the right decision and what it means for the club moving forward...

First of all, do you think it was the right decision for Leeds to offer Cooper a new contract?

"Absolutely. Cooper is a very good defender. He's got plenty of experience in the Championship and has all the attributes of a top centre-half.

"He's strong, good in the air and comfortable playing out from the back, but he's also not afraid to get stuck in or put his body on the line.

"He's a real leader on the pitch and a big character in the dressing room - making him the perfect choice for club captain.

"He was magnificent for Leeds in the Championship last season and his performances so far this campaign have been good, so he deserved to be rewarded with a new deal and I think it's the best decision for all involved.

"After the disappointment of missing out in the play-offs last season, Cooper will be determined to put things right and help Leeds win promotion to the Premier League. I'm expecting him to play a very important role for the Whites this season."

How do you think Leeds fans will be feeling about the decision?

"I think this is something that will go down very well with Leeds fans - especially as Dallas and Kalvin Phillips have both signed new long-term deals too.

"The fact that the club are determined to keep hold of their best players shows good ambition and this is something that will please Leeds supporters.

"Not only that, but Cooper is a top defender and his committed performances on the pitch have seen him become a fans' favourite at Elland Road over the past few years.

"Leeds fans have stood by Cooper through thick and thin, and I think they'll be delighted to see their captain commit his future to the club."

How do you think Cooper will be feeling about the new deal?

"I think he'll be delighted. Cooper seems to be really enjoying his football at the moment and he would've already been on a high after making his debut for Scotland over the international break.

"He's been at Leeds for over five years now and is really settled at the club. Not only is he an extremely important player on the pitch, but he's also a big character in the dressing room.

"He's now been given the opportunity to continue working under a fantastic head coach in Marcelo Bielsa and to continue the special relationship he has with the fans at Elland Road.

"The fact that Leeds were prepared to offer him a long-term deal him shows just how important he is to the team and that must be a real boost for his confidence.

"He'll now be determined to repay the club by leading the team to promotion to the Premier League this season."

How do you think the other Leeds players will feel about this?

"I think the Leeds players will be delighted with his. It shows good ambition from the club and that the owners are determined to take the club back to the Premier League.

"Not only that, but Cooper is a top defender and he's so important to the way that Leeds play under Bielsa.

"He's also a big character in the dressing room and has a great relationship with his teammates.

"The team spirit and togetherness within the Leeds squad is there for all to see and I think the players will be delighted for Cooper and pleased to see him commit his future to Elland Road."

What kind of role do you expect Cooper to play for Leeds this season?

"I don't think the new contract will have an impact on Cooper's performances for Leeds this season. His hunger and desire to take the club to the Premier League will still be there.

"I'm expecting him to play an extremely important role for the Whites and he'll be determined to lead the club to promotion.

"If anything, it will allow him to play with more confidence and I'm expecting the same kind of committed performances that saw him named in the Championship team of the year for last season."

Are you expecting any more Leeds players to sign new deals in the near future?

"Cooper, Dallas and Phillips have all signed new long-term contract extensions at Leeds over the past few days, so it's been quite a week for the club in that sense.

"After seeing last season's top scorer Kemar Roofe leave Elland Road when in the final year of his contract earlier this summer, maybe the club have learnt their lesson a little bit and want to get their best players tied down to new long-term deals.

"Mateusz Klich is out of contract at the end of the season and it was reported earlier this week that Leeds are hoping to get him tied down to a new deal.

"The midfielder was magnificent in the Championship last season and I personally think he's good enough to play at a higher level. I think the board need to get him tied down to a new deal as a matter of urgency."
