Coventry City finished the 2020/21 Championship campaign in a respectable 16th position, showing plenty of promise for the upcoming season.

The Sky Blues managed to steer themselves clear of a relegation fight last time out, after winning promotion to the division the season prior.

Mark Robins has certainly built an exciting team at Coventry in recent years and the objective will now be to build on last season and carry on their upward trajectory.

The Sky Blues have seen five new faces enter the doors of the club, with each new arrival expected to play a big part in the 2021/22 campaign.

Coventry possess a strong Championship team for this upcoming season, but how does the Midlands club's squad compare to the teams they have had in the past 15 years?

Here, we have compiled a starting XI containing only English players from the last 15 years, do you agree?

Starting us off in goal is now-Sunderland goalkeeper Lee Burge.

Like several players from this list, Burge is a product of Coventry's academy and progressed through the system from an early age.

Making his debut in 2011, the shot-stopper made 140 appearances for Coventry in his eight-year tenure with the club, but only emerged as a first-team regular in 2014.

Burge proved to be a consistent performer for The Sky Blues, but he struggled for form during the 2018/19 campaign. He was subsequently released at the end of that season, before joining Sunderland a few days later.

Fankaty Dabo fills in at right-back in this squad and is one of three options from Coventry's current squad.

The right-back progressed through the academy system at Chelsea, but was never afforded the chance to impress at first-team level.

During his time with The Blues, he embarked on three different loan spells, with Swindon, Vitesse and Sparta Rotterdam.

The Sky Blues secured the signing of the full-back in the summer of 2019 and he has since made 60 appearances for Coventry in their League One winning season and their first campaign back in the second tier.

Dabo won the club's Player of the Season award during the League One title winning season, and is expected to remain a big part of the club's future.

Scott Dann enjoyed a short spell with Coventry, but he proved to be an excellent addition for the 2008/09 campaign.

Graduating from Walsall's academy, Dann spent four of his senior years with the club, before signing for The Sky Blues in January 2008.

A strong second half of the season led Dann to the club's captaincy ahead of the 2008-09 Championship campaign, despite being just 21 years old at the time.

Birmingham of the Premier League came calling at the end of another brilliant season for the defender, and he ended his Coventry spell with 47 appearances and three goals.

He has since become a Premier League regular wit Crystal Palace and has over 200 top-tier appearances to his name.

Jordan Willis is an example of another academy graduate who has became an integral part of a Coventry first-team.

A couple of months after his 17th birthday, Willis was handed his senior debut at Coventry, playing 26 minutes in a 4-2 loss to Southampton in the Championship.

After a couple of years of limited game time, the centre-back established himself as a first-team regular during the 2013/14 campaign.

Proving maturity beyond his years, Willis swiftly became a rock at the back for his hometown. Ending eight years with the club by turning down a new contract in 2019, Willis made just shy of 200 appearances at Coventry.

Still only 20, Sam McCallum has already had three different loan spells with Coventry. The Sky Blues picked up the left-back from Herne Bay in 2018.

McCallum proceeded to make 25 appearances in two years for the club before Norwich signed the young full-back in January 2020, but he was immediately loaned back for the remainder of the 2019/20 season, as Coventry secured the League One title.

In similar fashion the following season, the 20-year-old was loaned back to Coventry for the entirety of the 2020/21 season - a year where he made 41 appearances.

McCallum has now joined QPR for the upcoming season and still has the potential to enjoy a very successful career.

Matty James' Coventry stay was brief but he certainly made a great impact on the club, helping The Sky Blues to comfortably avoid the emerging relegation battle last year.

James spent the second half of the 2020/21 campaign with Coventry after starting the season with Barnsley. He made 23 appearances for the Midlands club in that time, scoring three times.

The Leicester City loanee left his parent club this summer after nine years. James opted to re-united with his former manager in Nigel Pearson at Bristol City and will be lining up against The Sky Blues in the new campaign.

As a youth team player, the Bacup-born midfielder progressed through both the England and Manchester United set ups - two brilliant footballing schools to attend.

It is fair to say that Jordan Henderson has gone on to enjoy a wonderful career since his brief spell with Coventry in 2009.

The Champions League winner spent the second half of the 2008/09 campaign with The Sky Blues on what was an initial one-month loan, however, his time with the Midlands club extended to the end of the season.

Henderson made 10 appearances for Coventry that season and he scored his first senior goal of his career during his time with the club.

An injury in April cut Henderson's time with The Sky Blues short, and he returned to Sunderland before securing his big money move to Liverpool.

Callum O'Hare emerges as the third player of City's current squad to make the cut.

The 23-year-old joined the Aston Villa academy aged seven and progressed through the club's academy, making his first-team debut in August 2017.

The Solihull-born attacking midfielder then joined Coventry on loan during the 2019/20 campaign and became an integral part of the club's League One title win that season.

O'Hare was released by Villa in the summer of 2020, with Coventry swooping in and offering the playmaker a three-year deal.

The 23-year-old netted three times last season in Coventry colours and made 46 appearances in all competitions.

James Maddison is another success story of the club's academy system.

Progressing through each level of the club's academy system, Maddison was handed his debut in August 2014 during a 2-1 league Cup defeat against Cardiff. Three months later, Maddison signed his first professional contract and showed glimpses of brilliance in his short time with the club.

The 24-year-old joined Norwich City in the Premier League in February 2016, but headed back to Coventry for what remained of the 2015/16 season.

Maddison made 35 appearances for The Sky Blues during his two spells at the club and scored five times.

The attacking midfielder has gone on to excellent things since departing Coventry and at 24 years old, he still has a lot of time to do some brilliant things with his career.

Adam Armstrong proved to be highly prolific during his time at Coventry, and the fact that he was a teenager at the time makes it an even greater achievement.

The striker spent the 2015/16 season with City, joining the club on loan from Newcastle on 28 July 2015.

In 40 appearances during the course of the season, Armstrong netted 20 times as the club narrowly missed out on the play-off spots.

His scintillating performances in Sky Blue colours saw Armstrong be named in the the PFA Team of the Year for the League One club.

He has since gone on to prove himself at Championship level, and last season he scored 29 Championship goals and has subsequently caught the attentions of the higher division.

The final player on the team sheet is yet another Coventry City academy graduate.

The striker started his career with the club's academy and was handed his first-team debut in August 2009 during 1-0 defeat to Hartlepool in the League Cup.

Wilson spent time at Kettering and Tamworth the following two seasons, but arrived ahead of the 2012/13 campaign  as part of the first-team set up.

He netted once in 11 games that year, but particularly shone the following season. During the 2013/14 campaign, Wilson scored 21 times in 37 appearances, scooping the majority of the end of season awards at the club.

The now-Newcastle striker has 73 premier league goals to his name and has racked up nearly 200 top-tier appearances.
