Lancashire is a hub for many of the clubs in the Football League, with many plying their trades down in the lower echelons of English football in Leagues one and Two, while Burnley, Blackburn and Preston compete in the Championship to a decent standard.

Bolton Wanderers are set to be relegated to League One, where they can look forward to games with local teams like Rochdale, Bury, and maybe Oldham.

Although not all classed as geographically being in Lancashire, all these clubs are within a close drive of each other, and that's not forgetting Morecambe, Fleetwood, and Blackpool.

When trying to select a best 11 from the Lancashire clubs, it would be easy to select an all Burnley side, however, that would not do this article justice and be unfair to those playing for other clubs.

With this in mind, FLW writer Lee Connor gives his opinion on the best XI from the clubs based in Lancashire......

GK - Tom Heaton

heaton5

Although I said in the intro about selecting all Burnley players, I cannot really leave out the England man in goal.

Heaton has been superb for the Clarets as they have boasted one of the best defensive records in the league.

Heaton fully deserves his call up to the England squad which has come his way of late, and stands a real chance of making the squad for the summer should the goalkeeping injury gods look fondly on him.

Def - Shane Duffy

shane duffyshane duffy

It has been an excellent campaign for the Blackburn defender, who has seen his own stock rise despite a poor season for the club overall.

Duffy has been very solid when deployed in defence, often giving his all for the cause and really laying everything on the line for his team.

Duffy has already sparked interest from the Premier League with his form, and Rovers will face a battle to keep hold of him in the summer.

Def - Bailey Wright

Bailey WrightBailey Wright

Probably one of the most underrated defenders in the league, the 23-year-old Australian continues to impress for North End when selected, always giving his all.

He has amassed well over 150 appearances for the club now, and could potentially go down as an all time great at the club.

Preston have had a pretty solid season on the whole, and Wright has been a firm part of that. An impressive season all around for Wright, and he will be hoping the club can build even further next season.

Def - Michael Keane

michael keanemichael keanemichael keane

Probably the best centre half in the league along with Daniel Ayala at Boro, Keane has excelled this season under Sean Dyche.

He has formed a formidable partnership with Ben Mee as Burnley have charged towards automatic promotion, and he will be hoping to get the chance to play in the Premier League and show Man United exactly what they are missing.

If the Clarets do not manage to make it up, then interest in Keane will be high, with Stoke City having already registered their interest in January.

Mid - Josh Windass

windassss

The son of former Championship stalwart Dean, young Josh has been excellent for Accrington Stanley, earning himself a move to Scottish giants Rangers for the coming season.

Windass has bags of ability, and his performances have shown he is well capable of playing at a higher level than League Two.

If things go well at Rangers, we could well see Windass operating at a higher level in English football in the future, and for a lad who has so much confidence in his own ability, it would not surprise anyone.

Mid - Jordi Gomez

Jordi GomezJordi Gomez

He might have only been there since January, but Gomez has looked a class above most of his team mates.

An excellent player with a wand of a left foot, Gomez has scored a hat trick for Rovers since his move in January, and manager Paul Lambert will be desperate for him to stay.

He has the ability to be one of the best midfielders in the league on his day, and he has shown glimpses of this so far at Ewood Park.

Mid - Paul Gallagher

mitre2

The former Leicester man is an excellent player for Preston North End, and duly delivers when the club need him with goals and assists.

He has a keen eye for a dead ball, and can often be relied upon to hit the target or deliver the perfect ball in for a team mate.

The 31-year-old is probably just past his best years, but still has loads to offer at Championship level, as he has proved this season.

Mid - Joey Barton

Barton

Barton has to make the 11, as quite frankly he has been one of the signings of the season in the Championship.

Barton has perhaps had his best season so far in his career, proving a solid player in the middle of the park and allowing the more attacking flair players at Turf Moor to express themselves.

He is a shoe in for the team of the season, and although many still look at him with disdain due to his reputation, there is no doubting his quality as a footballer.

Mid - Ben Marshall

Ben MarshallBen Marshall

The Blackburn winger has all the attributes to be a top top player, and he showed this more than ever during a loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday a few seasons back.

Able to play either wing, up top, or even full back, Marshall has been one of the better players in a poor Rovers season.

Marshall will be keen to improve next season, that is if Rovers can keep hold of him, and show the rest of the league exactly why he is regarded as one of the biggest natural talents in the league.

Fwd - Zach Clough

clough7222

The only bright spark to come of Bolton Wanderers' miserable season is Zach Clough.

A player blessed stunning ability and able to win games seemingly on his own, the Trotters have unearthed a real gem in Clough.

Interest in him is already huge though, and it will be a miracle if he stays at Bolton as the club embark on a campaign in League One next term.

Fwd - Andre Gray

andre grayandre grayandre grayandre graym

The best striker in the league, hands down.

Gray has been superb, smashing in over 20 goals as Burnley look like they are set to clinch a place back in the Premier League, and Gray has been a huge part of that.

His partnership with Sam Vokes has wreaked havoc on the defences in the Championship this term, and manager Sean Dyche will be hoping they can emulate that same form in the Premier League next term.
