Expectation levels are likely to rise in South Wales for next season, with Swansea City eyeing progress after Russell Martin's first campaign in charge.

Finishing the second tier campaign in 15th, the Swans will be hoping that they can progress up the Championship table with a few new additions to bolster competition levels within the squad.

Martin's possession-based style of football has attracted a lot of attention this season, with the Swans averaging the highest percentage of possession in the division

He will be hoping that his side will be more settled within his rather unique playing style for the next campaign and can add an element of devastation to their approach play.

Whilst we wait and see how their recruitment pans out this summer, and how they begin the upcoming 2022/23 campaign, here, we take a look at the best Swansea XI using players from the past five seasons.

Do you agree?

Lukasz Fabiański has to be number one in this Swansea team made up of the club's best players from the last five years, with perhaps Freddie Woodman providing the closest for of competition.

Fabianski shone with the Swans, consistently showing top level ability during his time as the Swansea.com Stadium.

An excellent shot-stopper, with quick reflexes, he also constantly displayed composure and technical ability with the ball at his feet, dealing with the opposition's press well.

Again, the 2021/22 right-wing-back option is a close second, with Cyrus Christie adding real excitement down the Swans' right flank this season, whilst Ethan Laird provided a similar service during the first half.

However, academy graduate Connor Roberts features in this side, with the flying wing-back playing a starring role in recent seasons prior to this one.

A creative threat from the right, and possessing excellent levels of athleticism, it is no wonder that he earned a move to the Premier League.

Alfie Mawson enjoyed a successful 2017/18 season with the Swans, therefore, he just about makes the cut.

A defender who displayed impressive levels of maturity and confidence during that campaign, it is unfortunate that he has not been able to kick on in recent seasons.

A defender that tends to dominate his defensive duels, he is also a great ball carrier, whilst he has an excellent passing range.

Mawson is now available on a free transfer, following Fulham's decision to part company with him.

Signing for Tottenham Hotspur for an eight-figure fee shows the level of player that is being spoken about here, and whilst he has not quite kicked on with Spurs yet, he is still just 24.

Joe Rodon displayed excellent defensive qualities during his time with the Swans, ticking a lot of boxes, which paved his way to making the move to the Premier League.

Another who is extremely comfortable in possession, it will be interesting to see what the immediate future holds for the young defender.

Fitting the theme of technically gifted defenders who performed well for the Swans at a young age, Marc Guehi completes this central defensive trio.

Joining the Swans on loan from Chelsea, Guehi is now thriving at Crystal Palace, with the 21-year-old starting to establish himself in the national team set up at senior level.

At just 21 years of age, the future is very bright for Guehi, with his time at Swansea suggesting that he would go on and see the success he is currently seeing.

It feels like recency bias may play a part here, and it feels like it may be a slight disservice to Jake Bidwell, but Hannes Wolf makes thriving in that role during the second half of this season.

A creative and agile player in possession, he has also shown excellent end-product this season.

If Swansea were to agree a deal with Borussia Monchengladbach to secure another move for the exciting winger/converted wing-back, then he would be as important as any other arrival during this summer.

Wolf has a very bright future ahead of him.

Matt Grimes has proven to be an excellent addition at the Swansea.com Stadium since the club took a gamble on the former Exeter City midfield operator.

The left-footed midfielder has reached some very steep heights with the Swans and has deservingly caught the eye at Premier League clubs during his time with the South Wales club.

A super technician, who reads the game very well, Grimes is a key part as to why Swansea dominate midfield battles.

Possessing some excellent candidates to slot alongside Grimes, Leroy Fer just about pips the rest to the post.

The Dutch midfielder possessed lots of different attributes which made him a difficult player to read, proving to be an athletic and physical option, whilst also playing some excellent football.

He also could operate slightly advanced in the midfield, whilst he was just as competent when playing in a deeper holding role.

He went on to captain the Swans during the 2018/19 campaign.

Considering he was picked up on a free transfer, Jamie Paterson has been excellent in Swansea colours this season, entering unstoppable form at the start of the campaign.

The exciting attacking midfielder almost immediately formed an excellent working relationship with Joel Piroe, with the pair linking up to great effect during the campaign.

There were times during the 2021/22 season where Paterson looked a level above, proving to be an excellent addition at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Mentioned just before, Piroe has enjoyed a brilliant debut season in English football, and whilst grabbing the headlines as a scorer of goals, he has offered a much more-rounded service.

He holds the ball up very well and can link the play to great effect too, all whilst reading the game to determine when to make runs in behind and stretch the defence.

Martin's possession-based style of football means it has been a completely different role for him at the Championship club, adapting to this new style seamlessly.

Andre Ayew scored 47 times in 141 appearances for the Swans, proving to be a versatile option during his time in South Wales.

Operating in a striking role, on both wings, and as an attacking midfielder, Ayew shone in a Swansea shirt wherever he was required on the pitch, doing exactly with pure class too.

A sweet left foot, an ability to read the game that little bit quicker than most, and excellent levels of athleticism, Ayew emerges as one of the first names on this team sheet.
