It is fair to say that Sheffield Wednesday's supporters haven't had much to cheer about over the last five seasons.

The Owls would have been hoping to launch a push for promotion in the 2017/18 campaign after reaching the play-offs in the two previous terms.

However, the club ultimately failed to deliver the goods at this level as they finished 15th in the Championship standings.

Unable to live up to expectations in the following two seasons, Wednesday then experienced a year to forget in the second-tier as they were relegated to League One.

Despite illustrating some signs of promise in the 2021/22 campaign, the Owls were unable to secure an immediate return to the second-tier as they suffered defeat at the hands of Sunderland in the semi-finals of the play-offs earlier this month.

Here, we have decided to take a look back at this particular period in the club's history by building what we believe is Wednesday's best combined XI from the last five seasons.

Do you agree?

Whereas Bailey Peacock-Farrell did manage to produce some encouraging performances during his loan spell last season, Keiren Westwood just edges the Northern Ireland international out of this combined XI.

Despite the fact that he did struggle with his fitness over this particular period, Westwood still delivered the goods more often than not when he was fit.

Particularly impressive during the 2018/19 campaign, the shot-stopper managed to keep 11 clean-sheets in 20 appearances.

Westwood is currently on the lookout for a new club following a brief stint at Queens Park Rangers.

Morgan Fox featured regularly for the Owls before sealing a permanent switch to Stoke City in 2020.

During his final season at the club, the full-back managed to record a respectable WhoScored match rating of 6.79 in the second-tier as he made 2 tackles and 1.7 interceptions per game.

Having made nine appearances for Stoke last season, Fox will be hoping to get more game-time at the Bet365 Stadium later this year in the Championship.

Tom Lees played 38 league games for the Owls in his final season at Hillsborough before leaving the club last year.

During his lengthy spell with Wednesday, the defender produced a host of assured displays.

Particularly impressive during the 2017/18 and 2018/19 campaigns, Lees managed to average WhoScored match ratings of 7.16 and 7.06 in the second-tier.

Lees now plays for Huddersfield Town who experienced a great deal of success under the guidance of Carlos Corberan in the 2021/22 season.

Michael Hector joined Wednesday on loan from Chelsea for the 2018/19 season.

During this temporary stint, the defender managed to showcase his talent as he delivered a number of eye-catching displays in an Owls shirt.

In the 37 league games that he participated in, Hector made 2.1 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 5.4 clearances per game (as per WhoScored).

The defender was used sparingly by Fulham last season as Marco Silva's side achieved promotion to the Premier League.

Liam Palmer is the final defender to be included in this combined XI as his longevity has earned him a place in this team.

The 30-year-old has now made 346 appearances in all competitions for the Owls and will be keen to help the club launch a push for promotion later this year.

In the previous term, Palmer demonstrated his versatility by featuring regularly at centre-back for Wednesday.

Having averaged a respectable WhoScored rating of 6.65 in the third-tier last season, the full-back could go on to play a key role for his side in this division in the upcoming campaign.

When you consider that Barry Bannan has managed to provide some memorable moments for Wednesday's supporters during his time at the club, it was a no-brainer to include him in this combined XI.

Despite the fact that the Scotsman managed to provide a superb total of 21 direct goal contributions in League One last season, Wednesday were unable to secure promotion.

Having admitted that he wants to stay at the club for the 2022/23 campaign in order to help his side secure a return to the Championship, Bannan will fancy his chances of setting the third-tier alight again later this year.

Massimo Luongo takes up the other central-midfield position in this combined XI as he has been incredibly impressive when he has been fit enough to feature for the Owls.

During the previous campaign, the Australian made 3.3 tackles and 46.2 passes per game in the third-tier whilst he was also directly involved in five goals for his side (as per WhoScored).

Wednesday will be hoping to convince Luongo to stay at the club this summer as his current deal is set to expire in June.

Adam Reach's ability to produce a moment of sheer brilliance out of nothing for Wednesday allowed him to become a favourite with the club's supporters during his time at the club.

The 29-year-old lined up in a host of different positions for the Owls and was particularly effective in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons.

Reach provided 15 direct goal contributions in each of these aforementioned campaigns.

The midfielder currently plays for West Bromwich Albion who will be aiming to launch a push for a top-two finish in the second-tier next season.

Josh Windass also earns a place in this combined XI as he has been extremely effective in an attacking sense in the past two seasons.

Despite the fact that he managed to score nine goals and provide six assists in the second-tier during the 2020/21 campaign, the 28-year-old was unable to prevent his side from suffering relegation to League One.

Limited to just 11 league appearances last season due to injury, Windass still managed to provide a respectable total of six direct goal contributions at this level.

Signed by the Owls last year on a free transfer, Lee Gregory lived up to expectations in the 2021/22 season as he spearheaded the club's push for a play-off place.

In the 38 league games that he participated in, Gregory scored 16 goals in the third-tier whilst he also provided six assists for his team-mates.

Set to remain at the club until 2023, the forward will fancy his chances of making a major impact in League One again next season as he is more than capable of delivering the goods at this level.

Before sealing a move to Stoke City in 2020, Steven Fletcher featured regularly for Wednesday in the second-tier.

Particularly effective during his final season at the club, the forward managed to find the back of the net on 13 occasions in the Championship whilst he also chipped in with two assists at this level.

Fletcher is set to become a free-agent this summer after failing to earn a new deal at Stoke City.

The forward only scored three goals for the Potters last season despite making 39 appearances in all competitions.
