Peterborough United have experienced their fair share of highs and lows during the last five seasons.

After missing out on a place in the play-offs during the 2018/19 and 2019/20 campaigns, Posh achieved promotion to the Championship last year as they finished second in League One.

Peterborough would have been hoping to retain their place in this particular division during the previous term.

However, the 2021/22 season turned out to be a nightmare for Posh as they were relegated alongside Barnsley and Derby County.

Manager Grant McCann will now be looking to assemble a squad which is capable of challenging for an immediate return to the Championship this summer.

Having accomplished this aforementioned feat during his time in charge of Hull City, McCann will be confident in his ability to replicate this success at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Here, we have decided to reflect on this particular period in the club's history by creating the best combined Peterborough XI from the last five seasons.

Do you agree with our choices?

Before falling out of favour with former manager Darren Ferguson, Christy Pym helped his side secure a second-place finish in the third-tier by keeping 16 clean-sheets in 40 league appearances.

The goalkeeper was loaned out to Stevenage earlier this year where he played 23 games for the club in the second half of the 2021/22 season.

Having recently been placed on the transfer list by Posh, it will be interesting to see whether Pym attracts any interest from elsewhere in the coming months.

Dan Butler also played a key role in Peterborough's successful promotion push as he featured on 42 occasions in third-tier during this particular campaign.

Whereas the full-back was unable to replicate a similar level of performance in the Championship last season, there is no reason why he cannot go on to excel in the third-tier again for Posh in the upcoming campaign.

In the 2020/21 season, the defender made 1.8 tackles and 1.6 interceptions whilst he also provided seven direct goal contributions at this level.

Mark Beevers is one of two centre-backs included in this combined XI from the past five seasons.

The defender recorded an impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.07 in League One during Posh's promotion-winning campaign.

Whereas it is fair to say that he was less effective in the Championship, Beevers could help Peterborough prepare for a return to League One in a rather unconventional manner.

Like Pym, Beevers is up for sale and thus may be able to fund some transfers this summer if is bought by another team.

Frankie Kent has featured regularly for Peterborough since joining the club in 2019 following a stint at Colchester United.

The centre-back has made 120 appearances for the club in all competitions and will be keen to add to this tally when Posh make their return to competitive action later this year.

Having recorded a WhoScored match rating of 7.06 in the third-tier during the 2020/21 season, Kent ought to be confident in his ability to deliver the goods at this level again in the upcoming term.

Nathan Thompson is included in this particular combined XI due to the fact that he has managed to produce a host of assured displays during his time at Peterborough.

Particularly impressive in the club's promotion-winning campaign, the right-back provided five direct goal contributions in League One whilst he also averaged 2.4 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per fixture.

Having recorded a respectable WhoScored match rating of 6.62 in the second-tier last season, it will be interesting to see how Thompson will fare in the upcoming term.

Jack Taylor earns a place in this side due to the standard of his performances for Peterborough in the 2020/21 campaign.

The midfielder illustrated that he is more than capable of excelling in the third-tier by providing seven direct goal contributions in 36 league appearances.

When you consider that Taylor recorded a WhoScored match rating of 7.02 during this particular season, it wouldn't be a shock if he impresses again in this division later this year if he stays at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Signed by Peterborough in 2020, Sammie Szmodics provided an abundance of creativity during his first full season at the club as he was directly involved in 23 goals in 42 league appearances.

Less effective in the second-tier, the attacking midfielder only managed to find the back of the net on six occasions in 36 appearances.

By rediscovering the form that caused all kinds of issues for opposition defences in Peterborough's most recent League One campaign, Szmodics could help his side achieve a great deal of success at this level.

Siriki Dembele is also included in this particular side as he produced a host of eye-catching performances for Peterborough before sealing a move to AFC Bournemouth.

During his time with Posh, the 25-year-old managed to find the back of the net on 30 occasions whilst he also chipped in with 30 assists.

With Bournemouth set to feature in the Premier League next season following their promotion from the Championship, it will be interesting to see how Dembele will cope in this particular division.

Marcus Maddison performances for Peterborough during his final two seasons at the club were incredibly impressive and thus he unquestionably deserves a place in this combined XI.

The attacking midfielder was directly involved in 33 goals in the 2018/19 campaign whilst he provided 18 goal contributions in the first half of the following season before sealing a loan move to Hull City.

Maddison briefly featured for Spalding United last year following spells at Charlton Athletic and Bolton Wanderers.

Jonson Clarke-Harris takes up one of the two striker spots in this combined XI.

The 27-year-old joined Peterborough in 2020 for an undisclosed fee from Bristol Rovers and went on to spearhead the club's successful promotion push by scoring 31 goals in 45 league appearances.

Although he was unable to prevent Posh from suffering relegation earlier this year, Clarke-Harris did produce some respectable performances in the Championship as he provided 15 direct goal contributions at this level.

Ivan Toney is also included as part of this team as he was sensational at time during his spell at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Signed by Peterborough in 2018 from Newcastle United, Toney went on to score 49 goals for the club whilst he also provided 15 assists in 94 appearances.

The forward has gone on to feature for Brentford in the Premier League since leaving Posh.

Toney helped the Bees secure a 13th place finish in this division earlier this month by finding the back of the net on 12 goals at this level.
