Bristol City are not wasting any time preparing for the 2022/23 Championship season, with Mark Sykes already signed and a host of centre-backs reportedly on their radar.

Derby County's Curtis Davies, Northampton Town's Fraser Horsfall, and Oxford United's Elliott Moore have all been linked with a move to Ashton Gate as Nigel Pearson looks to shore things up defensively.

He'll know that though there were some positives from his first full season at the helm, an upturn in results will be needed or the South West club's hierarchy may decide that a change is needed in the dugout.

Pearson has made it no secret from the start that he felt it would take a while to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion and supporters will be hoping they start to see that group take shape this summer.

City have had some fantastic players in recent years but have never been able to keep a squad together that was capable of landing a top six place.

Today we're looking back at some of the best Robins from the past five years and putting together our dream combined XI – let us know if you agree...

The clear frontrunner to take the number one jersey is Dan Bentley, who had his wobbles at times in 2021/22 but has been very reliable since making the move from Brentford.

Prior to his arrival, the Robins had tried out a number of goalkeeping options in a fairly short period but Bentley has solved the issue between the sticks.

He has earned City plenty of points that they didn't really deserve and kept them in a lot of games they otherwise may have had no chance in.

Perhaps no longer the most popular figure at Ashton Gate given his recent stint with rivals Cardiff City, there can be no denying what a phenomenal servant to the club Aden Flint was.

His peak may have come more than five years ago but he deserves a place for his performances in the 2017/18 campaign.

He'd provide defensive solidity from the right of the back three as well as his ever-present threat in the opposition box.

The only one of the back three that is a current City player, Tomas Kalas has put his body on the line for the Robins time and time again since joining from Chelsea.

The Czech Republic international showcased his quality on the big stage at Euro 2022 and he'd slot in perfectly as the most central of our three centre-backs.

The 29-year-old is able to physically dominate opposition strikers and so often in the right place at the right time to extinguish any danger.

When Adam Webster was paired with Kalas in 2018/19, City had arguably the best central defensive partnership in the Championship and the prospect of a back three that also includes Flint is a mouthwatering one.

We've seen just how impressive he is with Brighton in the Premier League in recent years but at Ashton Gate, he will always be remembered for his stunning form in his single season in Bs3.

Playing on the left side of the back three would allow 'Webdini' the freedom to make more of the driving runs forward that were a staple of his time with the Robins.

Right-back/right wing-back has been a bit of a problem position for City in recent years but that gives us the opportunity to include 18-year-old wonderkid Alex Scott in our XI.

A midfielder by trade, the Guernsey Grealish has often been used on the right flank by Pearson this season and to great effect – with his surprising defensive tenacity making him a tough opponent for Championship wingers.

His rise from academy talent to one of the first names on the team sheet in 2021/22 has been remarkable and led the manager to tip him for an England cap in the future.

Our XI's star midfielder and captain, Josh Brownhill has made waves since leaving Ashton Gate to move to the Premier League, which is likely to be no surprise to Robins supporters.

The all-action central midfielder was brought in cheaply and developed in a City shirt – proving one of the club's best pieces of business in the last decade.

His energy in the centre of the park should help to unlock the best in the players around him.

Next to the all-action and energy of Brownhill, we've opted for the calm and composure of Marlon Pack.

Korey Smith was really unfortunate to miss out while if this was made in a year or so it may be Han-Noah Massengo or Joe Williams are impossible to ignore but the metronome reliability of Pack suits our XI down to the ground.

Another that crossed the divide to join Cardiff, the 31-year-old is available and there has been talk of a move back to Ashton Gate.

Jay Dasilva is a brilliant player but he loses out to academy product Joe Bryan, who flew down the left flank to great effect for years before joining Fulham.

His athleticism is his strongest suit defensively while we saw during the 2017/18 Carabao Cup run that Bryan is capable of scoring spectacular goals and can be a real asset in the final third.

The crosses he could deliver to our dynamic front three should help their goal tallies.

Off the back of the best season of his career, the irresistible Andi Weimann sits just behind our two strikers in the front three.

His energy and dynamism have made him an asset in recent seasons but the newfound ruthlessness in the final third, which have helped him score 22 times and provide 10 assists in 2021/22, make him even more of a nuisance for opposition defenders.

Weimann's work out of possession would make things even harder for other Championship sides.

Another homegrown talent, Bobby Reid outstanding 2017/18 campaign brought 21 goals and eight assists and have earned him a place in our XI.

More physical strikers such as Famara Diedhiou may feel they were unfortunate to miss out but the 29-year-old's pure quality means he was impossible to ignore.

He's got two promotions to the Premier League and 60 appearances in the top flight under his belt as well, while we can just forget about that ill-fated move to the Bluebirds.

Antoine Semenyo has stepped his game up a level in recent seasons and grown into one of the most exciting young forwards in the Championship.

There have been countless links to the Premier League but Robins fans will be hoping they can keep hold of him for at least one more season.

His pace and power coupled with a ferocious strike off both feet can make him impossible to stop while he's become a much cleverer footballer over the past two seasons, which has been reflected by his runs and decision-making in the final third.
