Bristol City are currently in the midst of rebuild under the stewardship of Nigel Pearson ahead of the upcoming 2021/22 campaign.

The Robins have already been busy bringing in new players during the current transfer window, with the likes of Matty James, Andy King and Rob Atkinson all joining from Leicester City, OH Leuven and Oxford United respectively.

Meanwhile the club have seen the likes of Famara Diedhiou, Liam Walsh and Henri Lansbury among others depart Ashton Gate for pastures new as their turnover continues.

Pearson has recently stated that more signings could be on the way if the club moves on some of their current squad, with finances understandably tight at the Sky Bet Championship club following the impacts of the ongoing pandemic.

Here, we take a look at the best Bristol City XI containing only English players from the last 15 years.

The experienced shot stopper played a total of 181 games for the Robins and was a reassuring presence between the sticks during his time at Ashton Gate.

Currently without a club after leaving Millwall this summer, the 33-year-old has played his entire career at Football League level and has taken in notable spells with the likes of Derby County, Rochdale and Wycombe Wanderers over the years.

Now looking for yet another club before he looks to hang up his gloves, Fielding is sure to attract plenty of interest in his services from clubs up and down the EFL pyramid as he plots his next move.

A player who has gone on to become a household name at Leeds United, Ayling played a vital role in helping the Robins to get out of Sky Bet League One before making the move to Elland Road.

As strong in attack as he is in defence, the versatile defender has seen his career go from strength to strength after leaving Yeovil Town during his younger years and is amongst the best in his position in the top flight.

He certainly provided a great option during his time at Bristol City and his contributions for the club certainly haven't been forgotten.

Flint is another player who became a cult hero during his time at Bristol City and will be fondly remembered by the Ashton Gate faithful for his commanding displays at the heart of defence.

The centre back has since gone on to take in spells with the likes of Middlesbrough, Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday but has arguably never hit the same sort of form that he showcased in a red shirt.

Capable of also popping up with goals where required, the defender is mainly remembered for his role in getting the club out of League One and into the Championship.

Fontaine was a key member of the promotion winning side at Ashton Gate under Gary Johnson and was a sturdy presence at the back as the Robins looked to establish themselves as a Sky Bet Championship club.

He would go on to play way over 200 games for the Robins and became one of the first names on the team sheet as he helped to stabilise the club in the second tier, where they have remained pretty much ever since.

The centre back certainly slots in well alongside Flint as part of our back four in this legendary Bristol City XI.

The attacking full back was a joy to watch down the left hand side at Ashton Gate and has continued to perform well since moving to Fulham a few years ago.

Bryan formed a key part of Lee Johnson's side which went so far in the League Cup and as a result of that he was quickly snapped up by the Whites for a good fee.

In all he made 230 appearances for the Robins and became a real favourite with the fans before he decided to move on to pastures new away from the club that he called home for the best part of eight years.

Versatile, hard working always consistent, Wagstaff was a great outlet for Bristol City on the right hand side of midfield during his time at Ashton Gate and was a player that was well regarded by many.

The 31-year-old was also part of the side which gained promotion from League One and won the Football League Trophy, meaning that he has a place in the history of the club for years to come.

Currently without a club after leaving Forest Green Rovers, Wagstaff is sure to not be short of options this summer as he is nothing short of a model professional.

A domineering character in the heart of midfield, Pack played the best part of 283 games for the Robins and was a consistent performer during his stint in a red shirt.

Now playing for near neighbours Cardiff City, the 30-year-old is still playing at a very good level despite his advancing years and has arguably been greatly missed at Ashton Gate since his move away from the club back in the summer of 2019.

Capable of stopping opposition attacks and dictating the play from the centre of the park, the midfielder would certainly be a good candidate to captain this XI.

A midfielder who was strong in the tackle and effective at taking matters into his own hands in the opposing half, Elliott is the perfect midfield partner to sit alongside Pack in the middle of the park.

The 36-year-old played 263 games for the Robins during his time at Ashton Gate and became a favourite with the fans due to his all action style that got the best out of not only him but also those around him.

He hung up his boots in 2018 after spending some time with Kingstonian in non league and will be well remembered for having a great career in a red shirt.

Rowe is a player who has the ability to play at left midfield and at left back where required and was always a good presence down that flank during his time at Ashton Gate.

The versatile 32-year-old recently left the Robins to pursue a new challenge with Doncaster Rovers and he will undoubtedly be hoping to achieve promotion with the Sky Bet League One side moving forwards.

In all Rowe made 67 appearances for the club prior to his departure and will be remembered for best for his consistent performances in various separate roles before seeing his time in a red shirt come to an end.

The towering striker proved to be a big hit with the fans during his three season spell at Ashton Gate and found his shooting boots to great effect as he helped the club to get up to the Sky Bet Championship.

Rarely prolific over the course of his career, Wilbraham thrived at Bristol City and hit an impressive 34 goals in 125 appearances before moving on to Bolton Wanderers and Rochdale.

He is now assistant manager to Steve Cotterill at Shrewsbury Town after hanging up his boots and it appears that he has his sights set on staying in management from now on.

The ideal striker partner for Wilbraham, Maynard was a player who was a real fox in the box finisher during his time at Bristol City and is still scoring goals as he enters the back end of what has been a long and successful career to date.

Maynard notched up 46 goals in 132 games for the Robins and was a regular scorer and starter as the club made their way up to the Sky Bet Championship during his time in a red shirt.

Now without a club after leaving Mansfield Town, Maynard will be looking to get back into the game as quickly as possible at the age of 34.
