With his goal on Monday, Sheffield Wednesday striker Atdhe Nuhiu reached 10 goals this season.

This includes five in his last three appearances.

He is outscoring his teammate, Jordan Rhodes (who cost a hefty sum), despite having played fewer minutes.

Yet the Kosovan striker could be on the way out.

His contract is set to expire this summer and the club has kept quiet over whether or not they will offer him a new one.

The temptation is to look at his current form and base the offer on that.

He has managed to step up a gear in time to lift the Owls out of a potential relegation battle.

His efforts up front have been pivotal as he has been involved in nine of Sheffield Wednesday’s 18 league goals in 2018.

This form helped end a run of five goalless games for Wednesday during which Nuhiu started just once.

Crucially, Nuhiu also offers a direct option. This allows Wednesday to be more flexible in their approach, while Steven Fletcher offers the same, Nuhiu is more effective: his 5.3 aerial duels won per game towers over Fletcher’s 2.9.

However, previous seasons suggest his goal scoring run is more likely a blip than a permanent change.

He failed to score in 23 appearances last season.

The season before, he managed just three goals in 41 league appearances.

Additionally, Wednesday have plenty of other goal scorers. Aside from Hooper and Rhodes, Lucas João has been showing form with seven goals and three assists in the last 11 games, Fernando Forestieri is also on his way back from injury.

Therefore, the decision of whether to keep him does not rest on his goal scoring.

It depends on what style of play Sheffield Wednesday want to play.

He doesn’t suit a passing game with his pass completion rate of 66%, but, as a target man, there’s no better option.
