There is no question that Charlton Athletic have underperformed in the Sky Bet League One division this season.

Not that long ago, the Addicks were a top flight side, and even more recently the south Londoners were competing in the Championship.

Now they languish in the bottom half of the third tier of English football, and at times looked like another relegation could materialise, to the horror of the Valley faithful.

With the young, but experienced, Karl Robinson at the helm, those associated with the club will be hoping that next season will be a year in which the team competes for promotion from the division.

The team finished 13 points off the play off spots this year, which considering the poor season Charlton have had, isn’t that bad.

Bridging that gap will certainly be viewed as an achievable target by Robinson and his team, and the former MK Dons boss will look to bolster his squad over the summer to ensure a top six finish.

A new striker would be a welcome addition to the squad, and one man who could lead the line next year may not cost the Addicks a penny...because he is already a Charlton player.

Striker Nicky Ajose joined Charlton last summer from Swindon Town, but after struggling, re-joined the Robins on loan halfway through the season.

The former Manchester United youngster found his scoring boots once more in Wiltshire however, and will return to his parent club this summer with a point to prove.

Ajose can undoubtedly score goals at this level, and has proven himself over several seasons.

Karl Robinson will work hard with the player over the summer, and if the boss can capture the consistency and ability the striker possesses, then Charlton could have a 20 goal a season striker on their hands.
