Newcastle’s United’s season in the Championship was a resounding success and they quickly bounced back to the Premier League at the first attempt under Rafa Benitez.
The Magpies will be playing top-tier football once again next season and Rafa Benitez will surely be thinking about the squad of players who can help take this team forward to Premier League safety.
But one man who might be on the outskirts of Rafa’s squad next season is £5million-rated Mo Diame, who was fiercely rotated in one of the most competitive Championship squads we’ve ever seen at this level.
Looking ahead, the former Hull City man won’t be a number one starter in the top tier if he wasn’t in the Championship and he might be considering a move away from the club this summer.
And one team we think should certainly be eyeing up the midfield powerhouse is Aston Villa, who, unlike the Magpies, failed to perform on their return to the Championship.
The Magpies did the business first time around unlike Villa but bringing in a players like Mo Diame would be a real step in the right direction.
They’ve been a little timid at times this campaign and the likes of Henri Lansbury, Birkir Bjarnsson, Conor Hourihane and Gary Gardner should all be concerned about the amount of play-time they’ll be getting over the coming months.
But Diame is different to what is on offer from all of these individuals, and you can’t in the slightest question that he’d add much needed power and muscle to the Villa midfield.
The pressure is on Steve Bruce to build a side capable of winning promotion the second time around and bringing in a player of Diame’s quality would be a superb start.
