Sheffield Wednesday have been flying under boss Carlos Carvahal this season, sitting ninth in the Sky Bet Championship.

Despite a 3-1 defeat at Charlton Athletic yesterday, they embarked on a 10 game unbeaten run in the league, and picked up an emphatic 3-0 Capital One Cup win over Arsenal as well.

New players have been crucial to the success of Wednesday this season, with new additions Fernando Forestieri and Ross Wallace both winning Player of the Month awards this season.

Lucas Joao and Marco Matias have also made big impressions since they joined, and Daniel Pudil as made a flying start to his career at Hillsborough.

But the old players have been essential too, with goalkeeper Keiren Westwood being consistently solid between the sticks, and the centre back pairing of Tom Lees and Glenn Loovens have also been solid as ever.

Jose Semedo and Keiran Lee have been fairly consistent in the middle of the park as the old and new boys start to gel.

With Wednesday fans and manager Carvahal hoping for a promotion challenge, FootballLeagueWorld writer Michael Hasan takes a look at five players who maybe haven't got the praise they deserve for Wednesday's good start.

Lucas Joao

The young Portuguese striker already looks a promising prospect at Wednesday which has been highlighted by the Wednesday fans.

But Carvahal mostly starts Nuhiu ahead of Joao which may be down to his experience, yet the poor form of Nuhiu this season should warrant a few starts for Joao in the weeks to come.

The youngster has shown great finishing ability with his well taken goal away to Rotherham United and scored an outstanding header against Arsenal.

The Portuguese striker has a big future ahead of him and adds an extra dimension to Wednesday's game when playing instead of Nuhiu and suits Carvahal's system a bit more as well due to his pace.

Glenn Loovens

The experienced centre-back has been part of an excellent pairing with young Englishman Tom Lees this season and last season.

Wednesday had the second best defence in the league last season due to the defensive resilience of Lees and Loovens, and both have made a good start to this season.

Yet it has been mainly Lees who gets the credit and is attracting Premier League interest, but Loovens contribution to the Wednesday defence has been invaluable, and the developing maturity of Lees has been in no short part to having the experienced Loovens alongside him.

Barry Bannan

The former Premier League midfielder found it tough establishing himself as a first team player at Aston Villa or Crystal Palace.

He has taken his time in finding match fitness at Wednesday but has filled in for the injured Marco Matias excellently and has caused defenders problems already.

His ability to track back and defend as well makes him a good box-to-box midfielder, and his shooting ability also makes him a potent attacking force.

When Matias returns, it is likely he will drop into the centre of midfield and add an attacking element whilst fellow midfielder Jose Semedo protects the defence.

Daniel Pudil

The Italian is on loan from Watford and has made an excellent start to life at Hillsborough.

The attacking full-back is rapid on the wings, his crosses have been pinpoint accurate, and he has developed a good understanding with left midfielder Matias.

He can score too and has been part of an excellent Wednesday defence so far.

He is relatively experienced as well and made big strides in his defensive game, and is crucial to Wednesday this season due to their lack of options at full-back. This frailty highlights what a big player Pudil is for them.

Kieran Lee

Whilst attacking players like Matias, Wallace, Forestieri and McGugan rake in the praise, the form of Kieran Lee has been good this year.

Part of the old crop of players inherited by Carvahal, his partnership with Semedo has been excellent this season and key to the good start they've made.

He contributes to attack well and can pick out key passes to the attackers, and has also been excellent in his defensive duties.
