It's been a turbulent and disappointing five years for Charlton Athletic as they've adjusted to life outside the top flight.

For a while, they became a Premier League staple, having seven seasons in the top flight and finishing seventh in 2003/04. They seemed to have cracked it, establishing themselves away from the dreaded drop.

In 2007 they were relegated, despite having not finished below 14th in their previous six seasons. Since then decline has been steady, accentuated in the last five years by one man. Roland Duchatelet.

He bought the club in January 2014 and since then there's been many shocking moments. We try to pick out four for you from his reign of terror.

Not long after arriving at the club, Duchatelet began to dictate team selection to Chris Powell. He sent an email asking why Ben Alnwick had been selected in goal.

He then sold Ben Alnwick.

The emails didn't end there. In one shocking incident he appeared to try to tell Chris Powell, a seasoned professional, how to play 4-4-2.

Jose Riga was brought in to save Charlton from relegation, which looked almost certain after Powell was eventually dismissed.

Riga was Duchatelet's choice and he did well, guiding them to safety with a series of impressive performances. It looked as though Charlton had found a method that might bring back the days of top flight football.

So Duchatelet sacked him.

Last season, despite staff hitting targets behind the scenes, Duchatelet cut their bonus payments.

Cost cutting measures are thought to be taking hold behind the scenes, with youth team players not allowed bottled water and the Wi-Fi being limited.

Lee Bowyer is then appointed manager in a move which surprised everyone. Bowyer had been managing a carp lake in France, but came back as a coach.

Recovering from the shock of his appointment, he's actually done very well and continues to do so under testing conditions. Perhaps this latest shock, a positive one, is a sign they can move forward once the ownership issue is settled.
