It was a season of vast improvement but ultimately minor disappointment for Sheffield Wednesday, who under a new manager and owner narrowly missed out on promotion.

Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri took over the club and installed Carlos Carvalhal in charge and backed him well in the transfer market.

Carvalhal brought in talented forwards like Fernando Forestieri and Gary Hooper who proved massive hits at the club with the former being nominated for Championship Player of the Season.

Other shrewd signings like Barry Bannan proved big hits too with the free agent one of the top performers in the Championship.

Jack Hunt, Lucas Joao, Marco Matias and Ross Wallace all proved hits as Wednesday gained a play-off place with their fast flowing attacking football.

The defence was secure too with Hunt and Pudil solid at full back and the partnership of Lees and Loovens continued to mature into an excellent one, whilst Kieren Westwood remained one of the best goalkeepers in the Football League.

As good as they were they narrowly missed out on promotion when Hull beat them 1-0 in the play-off final, but this was no fluke for Wednesday with Chansiri ready to back Carvalhal in the transfer market again, they'll have another go.

Here are FOUR key players for them next season......

Fernando Forestieri

Probably their best player from last season, the Italian wizard will need to replicate the form of last season if Wednesday are to go close again.

After a very average 14/15 campaign with Watford where he scored 5 goals in 25 games of a promotion winning season, he joined Wednesday who narrowly beat Leeds for the signature.

He dazzled fans with an array of stunning performances, scoring 15 goals in all and linking up well with other attacking players like Gary Hooper.

He possesses a lot of pace and technical ability and is one of the most naturally gifted players in the Football League.

Gary Hooper

The 28-year-old Englishman is another player who was a revelation at Hillsborough last season.

He was lethal for Celtic in his time there scoring 63 goals in 95 games including in the Champions League but had a miserable time for Norwich.

Enraged that he wasn't getting first team football at a struggling Norwich he forced through a permanent move to Sheffield Wednesday and bagged 13 goals in 29 games.

His scintillating form was down to excellent link up with Forestieri and if he is given a full season he may well score 20 plus.

He may well want to prove a point to former club Norwich who will be in the Championship next season with Sheffield Wednesday.

Barry Bannan

After signing on at Wednesday for free from Crystal Palace, he turned out to be a sensation at Championship level.

Wednesday fans compared him to Iniesta with his piercing runs through the midfield combined with his excellent passing and vision.

He won Player of the Month and impressed so much he got a new three-year deal.

He was named in the PFA Team of the Year and was near the top of the assists charts and is the heart of the Wednesday midfield, he must get even better next season if Wednesday are to challenge for promotion.

Kieren Westwood

Westwood is in many people's opinion the best goalkeeper in the Football League.

A Republic of Ireland regular as well, he helps organise the much improved back four at Wednesday with the partnership of Lees and Loovens largely helped by the influence of Westwood.

But even when they fail they can rely on the spectacular ability of Westwood to bail them out and he was the only player to turn up in the play-off final.

He was named in the PFA Team of the Year and will be crucial again for Wednesday next season.
