Barnsley have had a very impressive line of talent come from their academy in the last decade or so.

The Yorkshire club have never been one to go into the transfer market and spend million upon million, so recruiting from within has always been a strategy.

The current average age of the squad at the moment is low, which shows the desire for young talent rather than buying proven players.

This can work in the favour of Barnsley, but it could also be a problem in terms of a lack of experience.

Often, this has summed up the last decade for the football club. The Tykes have been a yo-yo club between the second and third tier of English football and this could well be a reason.

Nevertheless, the academy is one of the best in the country when you note it’s lack of funding.

Here, we look at  FOUR of the best Barnsley academy graduates in the last 10 years...

John Stones came through the ranks at Barnsley before making the switch to Everton in 2013.

After a few seasons on Merseyside, Manchester City came knocking and he is now a key player for both club and country.

James Bree made the step up into Barnsley's first-team and excelled under Paul Heckingbottom before joining Aston Villa.

Still young, Bree has a lot of football to look forward to in his career and has Barnsley to thank for this.

Mason Holgate is another, similar to Stones, who followed the trend of going from Barnsley to Everton.

The young defender is growing in confidence and gets minutes in Everton's first team.

He may not be as good as Stones is yet, but he is another defender off the Barnsley production line.

Danny Rose came through the ranks at Barnsley, but played for the first team just 17 times before his departure.

He may not have made it at Barnsley, but he's scoring goals at Mansfield.

The 24-year-old looks a real talent that could thrive higher in the footballing ladder.
